First, it's a short fast read... but I mostly love this book because it's written in such a way that is so descriptive that you're really pulled into the story. I think hotcocoa said she remembered it so vividly.. it's definitely written in a way that vividly narrates. I also love how it's the story of a bad guy. Also it's about perfume.. (not really but...) Anyway check your local library.
Karina - yay I am glad someone shares this with me. My bf is just constantly rolling his eyes when I watch Cook's Tour or his show on the Travel Network!
Lisa Theme song? (This question totally needs to be revived) - this is a tough one. Maybe Danger! High Voltage by Electric Six? Maybe Sex Sux by the Vaselines? This one takes some thinking about.
If your life was a T.V. show, which would it be? And who would play you? - ooh I don't know. My life isn't exciting at all. But my friend commented that she felt that I am always having the craziest interactions with strangers. She commented that an experience I recently had at a fancy boutique where the sales associate took, as in stole, this tail off this handbag could be an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Favorite Saturday morning activity? - I loveeeeeeeeeee the Backyardigans. I know it's a children's show but I look forward to putting it on as background noise on Saturday mornings. I love the songs they sing. They are so soothing! However I hate the name... backyardigans? What is that?
honey what type of painting do you do? without getting too artsy/fartsy let's just say I paint abstracted figures and landscapes. I wish I had more time/space to do art work.
who is your favorite contemporary artist? I have quite a few.
David Reed is my absolute favorite painter. He is also one of the smartest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting (also one of the nicest). Here are some examples of his paintings.
Pipilotti Rist is a video/installation who is so fun and cool. Check out her website. Her site
I like Richard Tuttle, Christopher Wool, Richard Prince, Ugo Rondione, and others.. I don't get to see art as much as I used to so I feel kinda outta the scene!
what's the best exhibit you've seen recently I didn't see this exhibition but my friend went and had a really good time. The artist group is called Gelitin at Leo Koenig Gallery. The exhibition was called "Tantamounter 24/7."
Here is the press release:
The “Tantamounter 24/7” is a gigantic, complex and very clever machine. It's like a huge huge Xerox copy machine, only bigger and more clever. The friendly customer places their personal objects, ideas, smells on one of the entry ports and after a short analysis will be informed of the time it will take to produce the copy.
The “Tantamounter 24/7” can scan two and three-dimensional objects, analyze their flavours, ideas, concepts and contents. As a clever machine it can not just copy or duplicate objects, but of course be tantamount to them. Due to its complex emotional circuitry one will never know how the “Tantamounter 24/7” will reflect the input. After the announced waiting time the input object and its duplicate will be ejected through the exit slot. The working mechanism behind “Tantamounter 24/7” is some completely hardwired intense individual agents operating day and night under close supervision of a bankrupt psychiatrist.
The “Tantamounter 24/7” is a novelty in an ever changing market and will have its first public test run on November 16th, 10 pm serving its audience 24/7 until November 23rd, 10 pm. The “Tantamounter 24/7” will be totally free of charge (Although it will be happy about food and love donations.) Get down and get your stuff tantamountered at Leo Koenig Inc., 545 W 23rd Street.
Yes, Leo Koenig Inc. will be open 24 hours a day for the entire week of November 16 through November 23rd.
So basically you put in an object.. any object.. and they make a copy of it using groceries and everyday objects in return (along with the original). My friend put in headphones... and the copy was mde of grapefruit halves and wire. He said that the attention to detail was really amazing. Other things that were put in were a garden gnome, clothes, stuffed animals, a wooden house model, a Powerbook... someone even put in a copy that the group had made and resulted with a more deconstructed version of the copy. I thought the idea was really interesting and I'm sad I missed it!! My friend was there until 3am just watching things coming out of the machine. He said the gallery was filled with people "ooohing and ahhhing."
if you had a day to do whatever you wanted, what would you do (excluding shopping)? There are so many things! Sometimes I wish I didn't have to sleep so I could do everything I wanted to do! But if it were anything... maybe snowboarding, eating at a great restaurant, taking a bath, having a nice chat with a friend, seeing some inspiring or not so inspiring art, topping it off with a concert at night and then drinks with friends. This is usually how I try to spend my weekends (maybe without the snowboarding).
do you have any funny/quirky habits? I don't know if they are really funny or quirky or just annoying or nuts... but I am constantly making lists about everything.
OMG! I am so happy! The New York Times did an article on Gelitin (the artist group I was telling you guys about above)!!! Here are some pictures from the exhibition!!! Yay I'm so happy I can show and not just tell you about!
This is where you would put your object in and the instructions.
How did you kitty end up with one eye? Was he born that way or neglected? I'm so glad you are his kitty mommy - a lot of people would discard him (like my slow crooked tail kitty that is the sweetest thing ever!)

His cornea burst when he was at most 2.5 months old. We adopted him from a shelter... (his shelter name was Gucci and his sisters were Fendi and Hermes!!! hehe) I just came home one day and his eye was just like that. I don't know how it happened actually. Anyway, it was terrible because he had to spend so much of his kitten childhood in a cone. And the worst part is the first time they removed the eye, it got infected in surgery, so they had to remove the prostetic eye (kept in his head for shape). So he had surgery twice!! A lot of my friends were really cruel and suggested I return him to the shelter or made comments about how I should have only gotten it from a breeder and shelter animals are all diseased and so on....
But he's the smartest little guy and very healthy now. He's super athletic. Having one eye doesn't slow him down at all. He loves being outdoors.
I will post pictures later of him when he had his cone on. It's very cute!
ps I giggled when I read your sentence describing your cat! How come it's slow? Like physically slow? or mentally. I think my Noodle (my other cat with two eyes) is a little slow... mentally.

she's mentally slow - she was the runt & i had to bottle feed her because the rest of the kittens would push her out & she wouldn't fight for food. Her tail is crooked because my cat was really too young / little to have babies & had SIX, one died & we think she got squished - her tail is broken in 3 places. (I know, irresponsible pet owner, but mom & baby are fixed now, my lesson learned the hard way). ANYWAY - maybe it's because I babied her when she was little, but she is really needy & really a people cat - but does seem to be a little slow about "getting" things. But she chases jingle balls like there is no tomorrow. And I think she's cute. And she's the sweetest thing ever.
I know what you mean about people being mean about it - a lot of people told me to just drop the kittens at the shelter - I just couldn't do it. I interviewed potential owners & even turned away two even though I was really ready to be rid of the kittens - it just didn't "feel" right, ya know? But some people just don't get that your pets are family members. And you wouldn't boot out your husband if he had a bad eye or had to have surgery! I mean really!
ETA: Those Gucci shoes are TO DIE FOR. I have no clue as to how you walk in 6 inch heels though

laken1 oooh how could I forget Simon, Theodore and Zeus and the gang! I was awwwwwwwwwwwwing about them for weeks! Yes, I wouldn't want to give us those little guys to just anyone!
Which one did you keep that's slow? Or is it the mama?
eta: btw I don't walk in those shoes! I've owned them for 4 years and have worn them for about 30 minutes max.

what i remember so vividly is the detailed descriptions of the smells and odors of every last thing in the book. some of them were completely unpleasant too. from what i remember of the story... yes he's a bad guy, but also a master perfume maker!
lynnie wrote: dot- that machine sounds so cool! but is it actually a machine- or a person making the things? sorry if that was a stupid question.
that's not a stupid question.. i was wondering that too when my friend told me about it. i guess the group gelitin is inside makinig the copies. i am obsessed with the manatee copy! it's so adorable! ;)
Dot, you have the cutest kitties! What a good kitty mommy you are, I'm so glad you refused to let your friends' comments influence you! Maybe they don't they know that a lot of times, professionally bred animals actually have more health problems than shelter animals...
Tati do you have any tattoos? No, but I always wanted one of a horse (maybe just the silhuette). My parents are pretty strict about body-related issues... I wasn't allowed to get my ears pierced and I just finally did them at 24!
what do you like best and least of your body? What I like best is that I feel that I can pretty much wear most looks and colors. I have a really boyish frame (v-shaped with narrow hips). What I like least are my thick calves! It's hard because I can't really make them smaller and I have a hard time finding boots. :(
what kind of pj's do you wear? It depends on the weather but's usually a top and then no bottom. I find wearing socks to bed especially constricting! Yuck!!
whens the last time you got drunk? last time you puked cause of it? I wasn't drunk but I went for dinner and drinks with my bf last night.
The last time I puked because of drinking was the night of a friend's bachelorette party. We went to a strip show (an all male cast burlesque) at 7pm but met for drinks at 5pm. By the time we went to this roof party at midnight, I was completely gone. Later in the evening, I found myself with some friends in some college students' apt. They had a shaved cat (it was the summer) named Mr. Baby and were offering Jell-O shots. It got pretty ugly by the time I went home. When I finally puked I was freaking out a little because it was all bright red. I thought I was puking blood. Only in the morning did I remember the Jell-O shots. :(
whats the best gift anyone's ever given you? cc's sister for xmas made me a tray of this dessert bar (magic cookie bars or hello dollies) that they sold at this coffee shop at my college. it was really thoughtful and i love eating sweets!
best compliment? My bf tells me I'm the best thing that has happened in his life and I've changed it for the better... I don't know if that's really 100% true but I think it's one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me.
last time you cried? I get weepy all the time for no reason when I watch TV!!! It's really silly because in real life I don't really cry that much. Maybe I need TV as an outlet!!
last time you got mad at someone? I try to work on letting stuff go... and not focus all my energy on getting mad, but there is this one person at work who really drives me up the wall!! She focuses all her time on how to do as little as possile. I find her especially annoying.
