Ditto. He was in survival mode and he knew exactly what he was doing. I don't think he was double-crossing Kate, I think he was doing what he thought was best to get them out of there. As a fugitive, she was pretty crafty when it came to escaping and Locke is definitely good with words. This episode actually made me like Locke a little more.

The producers have, however, debunked the sci-fi explanations. They have stated that everything can and will be explained in a sci-fact kind of way. I'm sure they've taken inspiration from lots of sources (possibly your mom's Forbidden Planet). I'm more inclined to believe, though, that it came from Stephen King (as the producers/writers) have already confirmed that he was their biggest source of inspiration and most of the things we're seeing in Lost have appeared in some way in a Stephen King book.
And many of the diehard Lost fans (myself included) would be super disappointed if it went all sci-fi. I think it's too easy of an explanation. Not creative or intricate enough. Just got around to reading this thread. Forbidden Planet is such a good movie and I could definitely see how it influenced writers on Lost. The mysterious force that makes the giant booming noises really reminds me of the "monster" from Forbidden Planet and there is that Walt connection is well.

I'm not too into scifi but I also really dislike Stephen King so I'm disappointed to hear that some of the creators of the show are citing him as their main source of inspiration.
