what about the magnet? Remember after Jack got into the hatch and he was going to look at the painted wall and it looked like buckets of paint laying around? The key dangling around his neck started moving toward the wall Yeah - and I think that's weird all the way around, because most keys are *not* magnetic, so that little scene doesn't even make sense to me. This is such a fun show!
agree completely--this has some serious significance ---they spent too long showing it for it to not be important

I'm presuming that the key around his neck was the key that went to the gun case, correct? Or is there another key he wears around his neck that I somehow missed?
There are theories speculating that is is the force that brought the plane down. However, if it was that strong to bring down a plane, it probably would have had a much more damaging effect on Jack. I'll look for other theories on this.
I don't think a magnet could have brought the plane down. If a magnet were strong enough to do that, then most metal objects on the island would be down in the hatch, or at least so strongly pulled toward the magnet, that they probably couldn't be picked up off the ground.
my mother is still thinking that this show is inspired by forbidden planet because there was a guy in that whose thoughts were creating the "monster." basically, she thinks Walt's thoughts might be the cause, though it's unintentional. when she saw the last episode where Walt is taken by the "others," she said, "well, he's probably going to sink that boat." so...maybe that's why he is all wet?
I want to know what's up with that green emoticon on the computer screen. And what program was Desmond "executing" when he turned off the alarm in the morning, or whatever it was?
It's been a while, but want some more info about that comic book of Walt's with the pictures of the polar bear.
I don't think I am right, but I thought of The Matrix when Desmond was injecting himself with that substance. Like maybe it was some kind of altered reality serum that would allow him to live as if he were a normal guy in a normal apartment, though he's really in that hatch.

Walt definitely has some kind of supernatural power to make things happen (like The Shine in The Shining). A few examples: a) In the Walt/Michael backstory, Walt was looking at a book about birds and a bird crashed into the sliding glass door of the apartment, b) Walt was reading a comic book with a polar bear and a polar bear appeared, c)Locke was teaching Walt to throw knives and Locke said, "see it in your mind's eye" and then Walt hit the bullseye, d) Walt wanted Michael to go look for Vincent, but it was raining. Michael told Walt that he would do it when the rain stopped and the rain immediately stopped.
Just a few examples. Walt definitely has some kind of power (which may also be why The Others want him).
i am so glad this show is back! i love this thread and all the great ideas you guys are putting forth.
about the fruit that desmond puts into his health shake in the blender -- it looked to me like it was canned fruit, not fresh. it had that uniform smoothness to it, especially the red fruit he put in first (which i thought might be cherries). so, i would guess that means he has been down there for a while. with the stenciled lettering on the inside of the hatch door, my first thought was that this was government related, but i don't like the theory that somehow the government is all behind what's going on with this island. maybe this race around the world had some kind of connection to the hatch -- as in, they set it up and stocked it with all those supplies he was using.
i also wondered if the button marked "execute" on the computer meant it was behind the weird things happening on the island. like, when he pushes "execute," maybe it sets off that monster/alarm system?
i could be reading too much into it, but when jack was first running in the stadium and desmond was running in the next staircase over, they almost looked like the same person. they are of a similar build and had similar longish, dark hair. and then when desmond said he had almost become a doctor, it seemed like he was like another way jack could have turned out if he had chosen another path in his life.
found this on another board for a band i like... hope this doesn't end up being a spoiler, it's a pretty good theory:
Here's something about that. Crazy!
"Rousseau's genetic mirror theory says that everyone in the world has an exact twin somewhere, however according to the theory you never encounter this person, by laws of probablitly and other natuaral occuring phemnomen. Its the theory that was devised by a French Mathematician named Marseille Roussau in the year 1988. He used a series of numbers to explain his theory. Now I know you're not going to believe this but here goes. 4 8 15 16 23 42 The 4 stands for 4 degrees of separation (not 6 or 7 as commonly stated.) Roussau believed that everyone in the world was connected by four different people. So in theory could meet yourself by using four different people connected to you. Example: Your brother's, boss's, neighbor nephew, knows your mirror. The 8 stands for the eighth continent, or the only place in the world where you could meet your mirror. He calculated it to be somewhere in the south pacific. Now we know its not actually as large as the other contintents but its used figurtively because everyone in all 7 continents could meet there mirror on the 8th universal continent. The 15 stands for the chances of you acually meeting yourself on this place, as in 15 out of 4,815,162,342. Look at the second set "815." Ring any bells? The 16 stands for the maximum amount of people that could encounter their twin all at the same time. Think about the number of main characters. The 23 is the number of years apart your twin and yourself are. You are not the same age as your twin. By chance and probablity it takes 23 years exactly for the same genes that made you to be connected again to form another you. The 42 stands for the maximimum number of years your twin and yourself can be alive at the same time. However people do die at diffferent times so thats why everyone isn't dead at 75. For example my twin was born on Sept. 6 2003 b/c i was born on Spet. 6 1980. Now that doesn't mean I will die in the year 2045, I could, but its not set in stone. My twin could die when he is 16, and then the whole thing starts over again."
lorelei, I don't know a whole lot about the comic book but I do know that it belonged to Hurley. There was an episode (I can't remember which one) that showed everyone boarding the plane and taking their seats and Hurley had the comic book. I also remember that it was written in Spanish.

yep, saw that one too... and hurley speaks spanish so it makes sense.
wow--scarlett, good stuff. did you come up with all that? some pretty good theories

good theory, but kinda deep for the general american population to follow IMO.
Now, Watch me be completely wrong!

Crystal---i just thought of this but after the accident in the hospital, i really thought the other gentlemen that died was Jack's dad for some reason....it kind of looked like him and i thought he was drunk and had a car accident b/c they paged him and he hadn't responded yet but then they said his name and i realized it was someone else but maybe jack's dad and shannon's dad are twins.

crystal, this was on the message board that I go to for Lost, too. I was going to post it when I had a free moment today, but looks like you beat me to it.
This is probably something everyone else already realized, but Danielle's last name is Rousseau, isn't it? Also, don't forget the importance of the Philosopher John Locke's theories on reason and faith... http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/locke/#2.6 and his social contract theory... http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/locke/#3.3 Kind of interesting considering the Character John Locke's behaviors and views. I this thread.
Check out the one I just started 'from a Lost message board.'
I agree that the coincidence of Locke and Rouseau isn't a coincidence at all.

hey, thanks, mikacat! yeah, i came up with that myself. it must be my english major days coming back out.
I'm watching Stephen King's 'Storm of the Century' right now and I just wanted to note some parallels between that and Lost.
There is an invader, an 'other' to their town in Storm (Desmond, Ethan parallell)
The 'other' seems to want children
There are mysterious whispers outside when the storm comes
The outsider seems to have mind control over the inhabitants and also unexplicably knows things about them (the island seems to have power over Locke and possibly, Desmond).
The townspeople have gathered in a shelter together in an effort to survive the storm.
Just some thoughts. Maybe I'll have more after Storm is over.
ETA on more parallel: The white and black stones-
In Lost, when Jack and Kate found 'Adam & Eve' (the skeletons in the caves) they were each holding a stone, one was holding a black stone, one a white stone
In Storm, the method of deciding whose child Linoge (the outsider) takes is by drawing stones out of a bag. All the stones are white except for one and the parent who pulls the black stone, loses their child.
very interesting. king has a colum in entertainment weekly sometimes, and he's written about how much he loves "lost." i think a few weeks ago he had a column all about how great the show is.
