Thanks, Heatherlynn and Carrie.... but my iPod must be defective! (I have a mini, too). The main menu options are:

playlists
browse
extras
settings
backlight
now playing

dc if you already have it set up to shuffle songs, then just go back to the menu and select any song. it always allows you to select the starting song and then will shuffle everything else after into random order.
