I'm with you on this one. I'll be moving very soon and don't plan on getting cable/satellite. I'm not even sure if I will have internet. Saves me money (to spend on new clothes!) and gives me more quality time with my girls. They'll cry boredom, but they'll get used to it and find new things to do.
i think the effects of not having a tv as a distraction could be more beneficial than we realize (or at least i am hoping). how old are your girls? can they watch dvds if you guys get desparate?
My girls are 6 and 3. I do plan on renting DVD's occassionally ($1 Red Box). Much better to watch new movies once a week than to watch the same old reruns everyday!
Actually, it's not as hard as you think. We cut the cable last year and I don't miss it. We have just basic cable. It might take some adjusting at first..but it's really not that big of a deal.

That's a good idea - you can also get them for free at your local library!
thanks, everyone! i'm actually kind of looking forward to the cahllenge (i know, i'm a dork). we have just basic cable now and that is what we will be discontinuing. we don't have rabbit ears and don't want to get any - so this will mean that we get no channels at all, which is why it will be such a big change. it just seems weird for me to not have tv AT ALL, but i'm okay with it (although i couldn't imagine not having a tv if something huge happens like katrina or 911 - in those instanced i was glued).
cricket - we are moving to istanbul, turkey. i just posted in the announcements section. have you been there? i know you've lived overseas previously, right? italy or somewhere else in europe iirc.

I haven't been to Istanbul. Were in Italy (near Venice) before. DH's squadron deployed to Turkey right when we got there, so he didn't go. I was relieved he didn't have to leave so soon, but I really wanted some nice rugs! Soon after that, they quit deploying there, so I never got any straight from there. DH did by me a Turkish rug last year when he was in Korea of all places!
Make sure you visit www.hulu.com - all my friends without tv/cable are addicted :) I mostly watch network tv and often question why I really need cable (the answer is always hgtv). I've gotten full seasons of tv shows at the library too. What a wonderful resource! Good luck!

vanessa - thanks for the website; i'll check it out! i didn't realize you could get dvds of tv series at libraries - that's good to know and could supplement what we already get from netflix adn itunes.
