my extreme decision to save money . . .
Permalink Closed

this may not be extreme for some of you but it is for me.  heres the deal: we are living in a tiny apt temporarily in an expensive city on one salary with two kids and my hubby and i both need a total wardrobe overhaul for various reasons.  so we have been trying to buy a little at a time, before we go overseas again in 3 months and won't have access to american shopping (except online, which is better than nothing but really sort of a pita when that's all there is imo).  the problem is that although we have no debt, we are having to dip into our savings at times to pay our cc in full.  so, we are trying to come up with ways to cut our expenses so we can buy the clothing, shoes, and accessories that we both need (hubby is a diplomat and we will both be going out a lot and need to look polished while living overseas) w/o having to dip into our savings.

so, i decided (hubby doesn't care so it was mainly my decision) to discontinue our cable starting april 1st.  i think it will be hard but i think i can do it.  btw this means absolutely no tv for us b/c we don't have rabbit ears and actually i don't think they even work anymore anyway.  so we will not be able to watch any tv in our apt except for dvds and downloads from itunes etc.

i think it will work though b/c in the mornings i already don't watch tv b/c i am in a hurry on school days and on other days my kids watch their dvds.  so i'm okay there.  during prime time tv nights, my hubby and i usually download/netflix a bunch of stuff and will watch whatever hubby has lined up for us (right now we're watching episodes of lost every night, for example).

the only times i watch tv are when i am cooking dinner, but most of the time i can't hear it anyway b/c the vent is on, or if hubby is working late and i'm by myself i'll watch it, but i can just as easily get on the internet, do a yoga dvd, or read a magazine and be entertained.  also, while i am cooking we plan to just turn on the ipod and listen to music, which we do most of the time already.

so i am thinking that b/c i still have the internet and can still watch tv at the gym while doing cardio that this would be tolerable and will give me more time to focus on other things, like reading and getting my children's baby books in order, etc.

this cutback will save us $60/month and hopefully will, along with other cutbacks (i.e. not going out to dinner as often), allow us a little more breathing room to shop!  so wish me luck!

Good-Luck! I went 5 years without a TV and never missed it.

Really?  Wow.  That's encouraging, thanks.  Maybe it's not so extreme after all.

I'm with you on this one. I'll be moving very soon and don't plan on getting cable/satellite. I'm not even sure if I will have internet. Saves me money (to spend on new clothes!) and gives me more quality time with my girls. They'll cry boredom, but they'll get used to it and find new things to do.

I only had three channels at my last apartment and managed just fine. I don't know if you have internet, but if there was something I really wanted to watch, I just watched it online. All my favorite shows were on there and I didn't feel like I was missing anything.

I don't think you'll miss it that much.

I agree with LoMish. Now that all of the shows are available online I bet you won't miss cable at all.

i think the effects of not having a tv as a distraction could be more beneficial than we realize (or at least i am hoping).  how old are your girls?  can they watch dvds if you guys get desparate?

I don't think that's extreme at all. A few years ago it would have been, but I agree with the other girls--most shows are now online, so it's not like you'll miss anything. And $60 a month is great when you're trying to cut back! Let us know how it goes!

You'll be fine.  You might miss it at first, but with the internet, it's all good...

Where are you moving to?

It will probably be hard at first but you'll get used to it. I haven't had cable for the past 2 years and it doesn't bother me at all - although I also grew up without cable so it's always been something that seemed kind of decadent to me!

Rabbit ears should still pick up some channels as long as you get reception where you live. And if you have a newer HDTV you'll pick up the digital signals and the picture will be just as clear as cable.

I think it will be fine.  I've gone up to 6 months w/o cable and have never missed it.  It's nice to have my time back.  I probably only watch 3 hours a week as is.
I think I'm not going to get cable right away when I move- may wait til after summer is over so that I don't watch anything when I could be outside!

I'm on year 4 of no cable/satellite and I'm managing just fine. In fact, I kept saying that once Mike passed the CPA exam we'd get satellite (can't have cable at my apt) and now that he's passed we've decided we still don't need it or want it. There are so many times we go and visit family and sit and find that even with 60+ channels there still isn't anything to watch on tv. We love Netflix and just catch our favorite tv shows when the last season hits dvd. It works well for us.

I went without cable for three years when I first bought my condo and was on a very strict budget. I was just fine. This was even before all of the tv shows were online!

Good luck- by the sounds of it, I think you will be fine. It is amazing on the shows they have on the internet now.

good decision!  as much as I like tv, you learn that you really don't miss it much when it's gone... like the others said, you can pretty much watch most of it on the internet anyway!

I think that's awesome! Especially with the nicer weather coming, you'll probably be outside more anyway!

You'll be fine! I didn't have TV for about 6 years during college and after, except for a few months when I had roommates who insisted on it. Even then I didn't watch it much because after not having TV for a while, you really don't miss it and it seems like a total time suck! And I agree with everyone else - if there's anything you're totally in love with, you'll probably find it online these days.

Your rabbit ears might not work, but I bought that converter box and an antenna a couple months back for about $40 total (I did have a $40 coupon from the gov't, but I think you can still get them) and I get about 10 channels with just that. Getting that was actually the thing that brought me out of my television "fast" (although I have been watching a few shows online for the past year or two)
