Naming your car and what your car says about you

Americans Have Personal Bonds With Cars By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON - Cheryl Hoffer leaves the world behind when she climbs into Breezy _ her Volkswagen GTI _ and drives the 31 miles of winding roads through California's Santa Cruz mountains to visit her daughter.

Like many in an AP-AOL Autos poll, her car is more than a machine and her relationship with it is intensely personal.

"I love my car, I like everything about it," said the 61-year-old nurse. The VW has all the sporty features and she came up with the nickname because it has a sunroof.

"My daughter lives about 31 miles away on one of the most dangerous roads to drive," said Hoffer, who loves navigating the hairpin turns. "It's wonderful."

Almost four in 10 of those polled said their car has a personality of its own. Two in 10 have a nickname for their car. Most often it is a female nickname; popular choices include variations on Betsy, Nelly, Blue and Baby.

When people talk about their strong feelings for their cars and trucks, they mention dependability, time spent maintaining them and the freedom that comes from cruising on the open road.

Women were more likely than men to attribute personal traits to their cars, more likely than men to give their car a nickname and more likely to see their cars as female.

For some, the loyalty comes from being able to count on a car such as "Myrtle the Turtle," the trusty Ford Escort of Erin Von Dollen, a 24-year-old college student and bank employee from Storrs, Conn.

"It's not the best looking car and not the fastest car, but it gets me there," she said. "The electrical system is a little funky. I think of it as temperamental. Sometimes I have to talk to it when it has problems with the cable connected to the battery."

That intense vehicle loyalty may be linked to the amount of effort an owner has put in keeping the car in good shape.

Fred Deusch, a retiree from North Providence, R.I., has restored many fine old cars. His current prize auto is a powder-blue 1933 Oldsmobile sports coupe with dark blue fenders _ "The Blue Lady."

His strong bond with cars goes back decades, when he did some drag racing and worked in the pit in stock car races. Like many people, Deusch loves to get out for a drive.

Three in 10 think of their car as having a gender, with 23 percent thinking of their cars as female, compared with just 7 percent male.

Four in five of those polled said they love to drive. Young adults and older people were more likely than those 30-39 to say they enjoy driving. People who make less than $25,000 were more likely than those who make more than $75,000 to say they enjoy driving.

Also, 62 percent say they can tell something about someone's personality just by the car he or she drives, according to the poll of 1,004 adults taken Dec. 19-21. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Andrew Persaud of Pembroke Pines, Fla., said he can tell a lot about someone who drives a practical Toyota, a sporty BMW or an imposing Hummer.

"If they're driving a Hummer, that's because of everybody else who has one," said Persaud, who drives a Honda Accord.

For Harlene Smith of Houston, Texas, the cars people drive tell her plenty about them.

"When I go to play bridge at the country club, people who are well off are driving Lexuses," said the 81-year-old retiree. "But they may just be putting on a good front. I drive an Oldsmobile, but it's paid for and it's mine."

What Your Car Color Says About Your Personality

You & Your Car Color

Black The most dangerous drivers tend to drive black cars. They have an aggressive personality or are someone who's an outsider or rebel.
Silver The second most dangerous drivers tend to prefer silver cars. They tend to be cool, calm and slightly aloof.
Green Green has come to signify eco-friendly and life, but it also represents jealousy, inexperience and people with hysterical tendencies.
Yellow Yellow is sunshine and denotes a happy person, but also is the color of cowardice and deceit. Yellow car drivers can be idealistic and novelty loving.
Blue Blue is calming. It can be strong and steadfast or light and friendly. People who drive blue cars are more introspective, reflective and cautious.
Gray Gray is is a cool, conservative color that seldom evokes strong emotion. Drivers of gray cars are calm, sober and dedicated to their work.
Red Red is Cupid and the devil. People who drive red cars are full of zest, energy and drive. They think, move and talk quickly.
Pink Pink is a softer, less violent, sweeter side of red. Pink cars are chosen by gentle, loving and affectionate drivers
White White is purity, cleanliness and innocence. White cars represent status-seeking extrovert drivers. They are the second most safe drivers.
Cream While the most dangerous drivers tend to drive black cars the safest drivers drive cream color cars. Cream color car owners are self-contained and controlled.

That's a fun article...and fairly true!

here's my car, her name is Ouiser (a la Steel Magnolias), because she's a feisty little southern B

ETA: I think the color analysis is a little off in this case...I'm not very cautious at all...but i did have a Silver Jeep before Ouiser...and that analysis definitely fits.

see, Jahni, I think it depends on the car - I wouldn't consider a grey mustang a calm car...

here's mine - her name is Bessie and the silver profile is pretty true... I don't know how calm I am, but if you're on the road when I'm around, get the hell outta my way!

(this is not my car, but I found this pic on the net, and mine is identical):

The first car I had was white only by luck - I wanted white, and my dad said I couldn't get white, but then he found a great deal on a white one. It was a '90 or '92 Toyota Tercel named Elliot.

My second car was a red '00 Dodge Neon. I was pretty happy with red for my second car and probably would've bought it myself if my dad hadn't, again, found a great deal for me. I begrudingly named the car Kaldi. I felt like it was a female, but I really didn't want a girl car so I was never really comfortable naming it.

And my new car, I've only had for a week or two so it hasn't been named yet. It's a '00 Saturn Ion, and I feel like it's a guy so I'm quite anxious to name it. It's maroon, though - which isn't on the list! I'm devoid of driving personality! I didn't pick the color though - I never get to pick my cars, even the make or model. My dad's in the salvage business, so I always just get whatever's a good deal he can get with his connections and everything

This is why my car looks like.  I love the green color but the green description doesn't match me at all!  It has yet to tell me it's name.

Jahni- I was totally wanting the same car you have, I liked the blue shade and I think it came in a cool shade of green too.  But my next vehicle is definintly going to be 4WD.

I have two cars:

I think that red is pretty accurate

This is my baby.  Unfortunately, the black fits me.  Only mine is black with metallic flake (or sparkles as I like to say).

I think that the colors descriptions are going to be pretty accurate, bc I would never have a green, yellow, or blue car and those definitely don't fit my personality.  I think certain personalities are drawn to certain colors.

I drive a dark blue Jetta.  I also didn't care about the color when I bought it.  It was just a really good deal for someone who drives 3000 miles a year.  That baby is a '99 and it only has 56,000 miles on it.  It doesn't have a name, but I do refer to it as "The Jetto", hee-hee.

I love this thread! Hilarious. I am so glad to know that there are others out there that love & name their cars too. I have Tabitha. I didn't name her - she told me her name. Seriously, just after I had signed the paperwork and was learning how to use all the features, the dealer showed me the GPS system and she spoke! I immediately thought of the word Tabitha and that's been her name ever since! I love and adore her and all of my friends call her by name too! "Hey, can Tabitha pick me up tonight?" Its so funny. She's blue - not my choice, but when I drove her, I knew she was mine...its was love at first drive. I only have one pic of her which I am not going to post b/c its when a nasty neighbor of mine put a huge paint streak on her door. Luckily, my car guy got it off, but man was I mad!!

I have a purple-ish honda civic. I've been putting off buying a new car for a looooooong time now. My commute is about 10 minutes to work (under a mile) so I can't justify the expense. I figure, just drive my car until it has a major problem or dies.

I sold my car 6 years ago when I moved to NYC and I still miss her!  She was a dark blue Audi A4, and her name was Marlene.  Since she was a German car, I named her after German actress Marlene Dietrich.

This is my baby. I named it Ares - the god of War. I was serious about this car in college. Now I'm angling for a Prius but we'll see when that happens. Boo money.

Unfortunately I think the color analysis is pretty accurate. I hate to be so predictable.

Boo, no color analysis for me. I drive a plum Saturn. Her name is Lucy. I didn't pick her; I needed a car in a hurry and she was the best candidate... but Lucy sure has been good to me.
