San Fran and the Wine Country - on a budget

Can anyone give me some info on San Fran and the wine country - places to go, tours to do, safe areas of town, unsafe areas of town, sketchy hotels, etc.  Any tips for the budget conscienous would be appreciated. 


Also when should BF and I go?  the end of July is out of the question as is October, May, and the months of Jan - March.  June would be pushing it with my client schedule.  We want to go this year because last night bf asked if we could do WDW again in 2008 so that will be our trip that year.


Are there any really good research sites out there?
