I've had really good luck with James Perse on sale, or J.Crew - they are surprizingly good and hold up well to wear. James Perse is a bit more luxurious feeling, but I'm not always sure they are worth twenty five on sale!
I own one Splendid top, and it's *very* good quality. It's a long-sleeved cowl neck, nice material, holds its shape (have had it for two years now), never shrinks in the wash, doesn't fade. I don't know if everything they make is like that, but I'd buy that brand again.
I don't buy much at the Gap, but the tees I've bought there recently (in the last year or so) have held up very well. Both long- and short-sleeved.

I second J.Crew, even better if you have an outlet nearby. I find their cuts to be the most flattering and their tees/tanks hold there shape and color forever ime.
I love, love, love, the Mossimo tee-s at Target. I have a black one that I think may have a little bit of Lycra in it, and it's has been a staple for over a year now. It hasn't faded, shrunk, or lost its shape...I even layer it over a cami and wear it to work...plus i think it was only 9.99...

I'm a big fan of Petit Bateau. They're long enough not to show anything when you sit down (bc most of us are probably still wearing mid-low-rise jeans...right?) and they're soft and get softer with each wash.
I like J Crew and C&C California. I like the length and styles that C&C offers and they have so many colors to choose from. They're nice and thin so they're wonderful for layering. I've never had a problem with shrinking, fading, or tearing with either brand.

I haven't had such good luck with these. I bought three because they fit me perfectly in the dressing room... but after about two washes they all shrunk a little and somehow also stretched out at the bottom
I threw the all away

I LOVE C&C California and Splendid! They usually have great or hard to find colors, I think. The quality is very good, and I love the softness of their tees. The tees from both brands seem to hold their shape well. I wash the tees on the gentle cycle with Woolite, to keep the color from fading.
Splendid is a good brand...the tees don't shrink, plus the cotton is silky-soft. The fit is very nice too. I'm not careful about my plum Splendid tee but it's held up beautifully.
J. Crew is another of my favorite places to get tees.
