I really want a new black dress - and surplice style tops look really nice on me. So, there is a Elie Tahari that I've had my eye on for a while, but it doesn't appear to ever go on sale. I found a pretty similar one at J. Crew. What do you think I should do?
Elie Tahari ($498)
J. Crew ($165)
So, this is a dress that I'm looking to wear for a long time. Both are silk chiffon and neither is available in stores (at least - not yet for the J. Crew). What do you think? I've had great luck with both brands for quality. Help!
Tough call; they're both very pretty. Do you *need* a $500 LBD? I'd probably go for the JCrew one and be perfectly happy. They are fairly similar, IMO.
I have two LBD's...one is a Ralph Lauren that I got on an amazing sale for $22 and it's beautiful. The other is from The Limited - about the same price as the RL one. The Limited dress is a basic sheath but it fits like a glove and always gets me compliments.
If money's no object, then go for the Tahari. But I think the JCrew would work just as well and not put as big a hole in your budget.

I say go for the less expensive J Crew one. Here's my reason. Typically the occasions I wear a LBD dress tend to revolve around the same people. Therefore I never want to wear the same dress that often. By spending less you can buy more than one.

I vote Jcrew. I'm all for spending money, but Jcrew make nice clothes that last. For such a basic piece, I'd go with Jcrew. The other one doesn't look special enough for the money.
Thanks for the advice! I'm going to order the J. Crew - if it doesn't work out, I'll order the Tahari. I just love the shape too much, and it would be so nice to fall in love with the less expensive one!
