I know there have been posts on these before, but I am wondering if there are any new restaurants or things like that in Phoenix, LA and San Diego? I'm going to those three cities for about 5 days to look at law schools. Any good recommendations? I pretty much like any kind of food. Also, any good hotel recs?

I always go to C&O Trattoria and Diddy Riese when I'm in LA, and I have a whole bunch of favorite places in San Diego:

1.  Aloha Sushi:  It's in La Jolla on Fay Ave., and it is to die for.  I used to try and go here at least once a week.

2.  George's at the Cove:  Fancy, but if you dine upstairs it's not TOO expensive.

3.  The Crabcatcher:  Delicious.

4.  Brockton Villa:  Gorgeous view of La Jolla cove and Shores, and the Coast Toast is amazing.

5.  The Cottage:  La Jolla favorite for brunch and breakfast.  Everything on the menu is good.

6.  Kono's:  Breakfast place at the entrance to Crystal Pier.  You won't find a bigger, cheaper breakfast in San Diego (unless you want Mexican food for breakfast).

Those are just some of my favorites...

Thanks for all the recs, gigembre! Sounds like I'll have a ton of options! Mmm.

Also, I totally forgot this in my previous post, but any shopping recs? I don't think I'll have a ton of time in Phoenix and SD, but I should have more time to shop in LA.

Well, I can tell you the shopping is fabulous in LA, but I think Lilykind or one of the other girls in LA would do a much better job with shopping recommendations.  I would check out the Lucky shopping guides on their website as a good starting off point.  If you like shopping in malls, I always enjoy the Century City Mall, and the Santa Monica Promenade is fun.

I hope you enjoy your time in SD!  Which schools will you be visiting?  USD?  The campus is gorgeous, although the surrounding area isn't the best part of San Diego.  Hopefully you'll have time to see some of the gorgeous parts of San Diego, like La Jolla and Del Mar.  Let me know if you ever want any info about SD!

Definitely try to get to Del Mar if you can.  There's a great place on Camino Del Mar (the main road by the coast) called Board and Brew.  They have AMAZING sandwiches and you can walk to the park at 15th St. (I think that's the street) and watch the waves and eat.  Love it.

There's also Pacifica Del Mar, Sbicca, and a few other places that are in the Del Mar Plaza and right around there.  Pacifica has good food and great views and there's also a cool bar on top of the plaza there where you can relax and watch the sunset on the patio with your drink.

Thanks NcShopper! I'm pretty excited. I California, and now is a great time to go since it's supposed to be getting colder in WI this weekend.

gingembre, I'll be visiting USD, Thomas Jefferson, and Cal Western. I don't know if it's true, but I read somewhere that Veronica Mars is filmed at USD for the college scenes. If so, it looks beautiful! Btw, thanks for the shopping recs. In WI, pretty much all we have in the way of shopping is malls, so I'm used to shopping in them.

Does anyone know anything about Dan Tana's in LA? I saw in in C Magazine, it was some best of California thing.

Dan Tana's is awesome old school italian.  They make a great fettucine alfredo.  I also recommend having a drink or dessert at Shutters on the Beach - their bar is awesome and it's a great place to watch the sun set.

If you are down in the south bay - I recommend having breakfast at Uncle Bill's Pancake House in Manhattan Beach - they have awesome pancakes and a great view of the ocean.

Montana Ave in Santa Monica is also a great place for strolling, shopping and there are some good little cafes.

Have fun!  Congratulations on law school too!  That is a big accomplishment!

I have a few fav resturants -

San Diego -

The spot - La Jolla , Prospect st. Amazing food, great wine. Kind of a causul pub and there is tons of great shopping on prospect st too.

Sushi USA - One of my fav sushi resturants in san diego. Located in poway ( about 15 min from san diego)

Sushi Deli - again amazing sushi. Located downtown san diego. Really good and really cheap! (also located one block from horton plaza mall which is a really cool place to shop)

Flemings steak house - downtown SD. So freaking good. Pricey though.

In San Diego, breakfast suggestions:

Parkhouse Eatery (wonderful brunch, yummy mimosas, awesome "scrambles" and "hashes".  My friends and I seriously eat here every single Sunday.

222 Cafe - Small cafe in downtown.  There is an ongoing debate between my work colleagues about which is better (222 or PE).

Have fun!

Where will you be in Phoenix? I am assuming near ASU? Mill Ave. has some cute little stores, but the serious shopping is in Scottsdale.

Shopping recs:

Scottsdale Fashion Square (S. Scottsdale)-- gigantic mall with tons of nice stores. There are a lot of great restaurants in that area, too.

Kierland Commons (N. Scottsdale) -- fewer stores, but more boutiques & interesting stuff. Also, it's outdoors & thus much prettier. Zinc Bistro is over there, which is supposed to be pretty good, and there's a Nordstrom Rack across the street.

Camelback area (N. Phoenix) -- There's a Nordstrom Last Chance on 24th Street and Camelback, which is where all the Nordstrom returns go to die. You can get amazing deals there if you're willing to sort through damaged stuff & a disorganized store. Also, there is the Biltmore shopping center just down the street -- it has some higher-end boutiques, Saks, etc. Just north of that area there is a Loehmann's (around 32nd St/Glendale). It is hit & miss, but sometimes has great deals.

Thanks Halleybird! The Scottsdale Fashion Square sounds great! They all do, actually.

ETA: I leave today! Woohoo! I'll report on the recs when I get back!

Just wanted to update on my trip, in case anyone was interested.

We didn't get out much in SD, but we did go to this nice steakhouse (something Ham's?) on Harbor Island.

In LA, we went to both Dan Tana's (delicious!) and Mastro's Steakhouse (one of the best steaks I've ever had!).

I also went to Diddy Riese. Unfortunately, I can't get that ice cream sandwich out of my head!

I also went to the Century City mall - loved it! I need to move to California!

Thanks for all the wonderful recs!
