Which Fodor's guide??

I put this in this thread, because, well, technically it's shopping, and also I hoped it would get more traffic!


I've never used Fodor's guides, so I'm a little confused on which one to get.  What's the difference between the Gold guide and the other guides?  Which one should I get if I'm traveling on a restricted budget?

I don't have a very good answer, but I wanted to suggest checking your local library. Mine carries all the different ones, either the latest year's version or at worst, one year old.
I've checked many of them out over the years, and this allows me to look through all of them at home before going on vacation. I know it's not what you asked but I thought I'd let you know...

I'm afraid that I don't have any Fodor's advice either but I just wanted to recommend the Lonely Planet guides.  I used to work in travel and have travelled quite a bit and they've never steered me wrong.  I'd recommend them whether you were doing super budget travel or slightly more upscale (plus I believe they're an affiliate...).

I was going to suggest Lonely Planet, too, for budget travel.

For some research before, I suggest http://www.bootsnall.com/. They are very helpful on the message boards.

I third the Lonely Planet recommendation!  Every place I've tried that they recommend has been great.  I haven't used Fodor's much, though.

Thanks everyone!  My friend will have the Lonely Planet South America, but I can't decide between the Footprints South America and the Fodor's...  I guess I'll be making a trip to Barnes and Noble for some research!
