I am traveling there with DH next week. He's working during the week so I'll have about three days by myself until the weekend. We'll be in San Juan. I already plan for some beach time (have been self-tanning so I don't frighten people away) and shopping/sightseeing.

I have downloaded info and feel fairly well prepped, but does anyone have specific beach / shopping / dining recs? I'd love to hear from someone who's actually been there.

TIA

Atlgirl, I was in San Juan in 2005.  Maybe I can help!

For a casual bite to eat, I recommend La Bombonera in Old San Juan -- the oldest restaurant in San Juan, I believe!  Get a mofongo to eat and a Mallorca for dessert.  It's very charming :) If you want a change of pace, try Dragonfly for Asian/Latino fusion. El Patio de Sam has Caribbean and American food with live music at nights and fun frozen drinks.  Also, Parrot Club is lively after dark if you want to go out.  There's an awesome artisan shop near La Bombonera, but I can't remember the name, unfortunately.  There's also a fantastic swimsuit store in Old San Juan with reasonable prices. I didn't have too much time to shop, but Old San Juan is pretty self-contained, so if you wander the streets you'll come across some good stuff.  Sorry I can't recall the names

If you have time, you might want to take a day trip to El Yunque, the rainforest on the eastern part of PR.  You can book it through one of the major hotels.

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions (I feel like I'm taking over Travel and Tourism, but everyone has been asking about places I've recently visited!)

Thank you! I will print this and take with my other information. I love getting recs (esp. on food). I will have several days to myself, so may well visit El Yunque. It sounds fascinating. :)
