Thoughts on this dress?
Permalink Closed

I think this dress is cute, but my worry is that I am always attracted to clothes that make me look younger then I am(remeber the cherry shoes post ).  I'm afraid I would end up looking like some sort of Catholic school girl. I was thinking of wearing it for some of my audtions to try and get into  music conservatories to finish my degree.

I have a Delias near me they however did not have this dress at the store.

So should I buy it and give it a try? Or pass on it and look for something less "young" looking?

I really like it, but I understand having a dilemma about what message clothes send out.  I think the dress you posted is really cute. I watch What Not to Wear, and although I love the show, I get more and more confused everytime I watch it.  They emphasize age appropriateness all the time and criticize people who have juvenile patterns on their clothes, yet on that show I have seen Stacy London (age 37 or 38) wear a dress with watermelons on it and one with red stars on it.  Also, she said a couple of seasons ago that a person should not wear miniskirts if they are over the age 35, yet I saw her wear one on a show this season.  I am 36 and I have a friend at work who is 43.  I asked her one time about a skirt I was looking at which had cherries on it (like your shoes) and she told me that she had about decided that if it fit and she liked it, she would wear it.  I am having the same dilemma about this dress here.  It is on sale for $195 ish.  I have not been able to get it out of my mind, and if it were less than $100,  I would jump on it.  I absolutely adore it, but for some reason I keep thinking about those shapeless jumpers many women wear, even though this does not look like one of those at all.  I am not sure how much the dress is that you posted, but  I think it is adorable.  I don't know if I helped any.

Frankly I am not feeling this dress.  I'm all for cutesy and uber-femme and have many sweet, silly things in my closet to prove it.  But in this case, I think the bow is a bit awkward and it cheapens the dress.  Also I don't think the shape is very flattering.

As far as appropriateness, I think that depends on your age and situation.  As a student in a creative field, this might fly perfectly.  I'm almost 30 & in a tech field, and I know I would never be able to pull it off.  HTH.

i think it's cute, but maybe the bow is what's making it look cutesy/younger. i bet it would be removable, though...

If that bow were a sash that tied around the dress - it would be a lot better. I'm sure that's something that you could easily do.

It's cute and all, but I really don't see it for any sort of professional setting. Also, I think the shape could be really unflattering.

Thanks girls.

I think I am gonna pass on it. It would probably be more grown up with out the bow,but it might be ordinary looking. I don't think it is worth spending $44 on.

I'm just gonna keep looking for something else.

I have a dress that is very similar.  It is the same shape, no bow, in a grey tweed.  I bought it to wear for work with black textured tights and knee length boots.  I love the look except its too short for work!

I think the dilemma here is that the pattern on the dress is reminiscent of private school uniforms.  Maybe try to find a similar dress without the pattern?
