if you had left out the "looking at all these nice things the people on the board buy" it wouldn't have come across as passive aggressive.

it came across as "wow, you sure do spend a lot of money on yourselves, did it ever occur to you to give to others?" -- at least that's how it came across to me, and from what I've read, it appears that I'm not the only one.

it came across as confrontational and antagonistic.

Ditto.  That's exactly how I reacted to it, which is why I wanted to clarify what you meant by your question.

simple questions are for simple thinkers..
so.. how do you go about asking for something at a restaurant?
Maybe add a little shakespeare to the, "may I have a baked potatoe with that?"

thanks for the welcome.

I have a feeling I'm a tad different than most here, but thats what makes it interesting.

shopping is fun.

wow. I'm going to have to keep an eye on you.

That's your myspace page? If you have a problem, which you obviously do, with our consumerism than why join the sight in the first place? If you took one minute to look around and read some of the posts you'd realize that the women on here are an amazing group of people who are about alot more than buying pretty things. They are women who are beautiful on the inside and want their outisde to match. There is nothing wrong with that. I'm sorry you feel that way. You seem to being making a point of not belonging or being different/better than us just to stir things up. Sad.

Squishy, I think I you.  (I had to restrain myself from writing something similar earlier.)

aww, you're kinda swell too :)
it's going to take a while before i can use this emoticon without being reminded by the haunting connotations associated with it.

wooooah, put the cat claws back.
I'm not here to stir up drama.
Obey, conform, consume, its a slogan from "obey giant".
It would take forever to explain, and I really don't have the patience to type it all out. I always speak my mind. Thats just how I am.. if you choose to read into it thats your decision.

I don't think anyone here wouldn't agree that giving to others is an important thing to do with our blessings.

BUT

"speaking your mind" and implying that you feel better than everyone else because we enjoy shopping are two different things. There isn't much reason for me to discuss charitable donations on this site, and the only reason I could think I would do that would be to get ideas of where to donate money, or to tell everyone about a really cool program like the one that helps people set up their own businesses. I don't start a thread to discuss it just so I can measure my heart against anyone else's.

Just because I spend some money on things for myself does not automatically mean I never spend money helping anyone else. But I just feel that it's not right to toot my own horn and tell everyone every time I give money. I'm sure many people feel this way. Which is why donations are rarely discussed here in a "look at me and what a great person I am" manner.

I never called anyone selfish or made any accusations, I never even implied it.
You all are implying it on yourselves.

I rarely get involved in conversations like these, but in this case I think everyone is being a little a little harsh in their comments to VanGogh86.  I think when she posted her original comment she could have worded it differently, however, I don't think she meant it as rudely as many of you have taken it.

We often judge newcomers and aren't as welcoming as we should be when they post their opinions because we don't know them.  I think this is just a case of misunderstanding and I hope that there will be no hard feelings regarding it.  I'm sure VanGogh86 will have a lot to add to the board as we will have a lot to add her.

In my first time posting, I know I wasn't quite sure how to say things.  Hopefully we can all remember what thats like.

The most I can give at this time in my life is give my unwanted items to Goodwill. I donate there pretty much on a monthly basis. I'm always finding stuff that I no longer want or use.

At my job, we are big on giving and helping our communities.  I've signed up to give a portion of my paycheck every week to United Way.  $6 a week doesn't seem like much but it's over $300 a year which provides a lot of food and services to people who need it.

I also donate items to Goodwill.  It's been a while but I finally have boxes to put a lot of stuff in.  I'm taking a load tomorrow.
