So today I get a letter from Gold's Gym saying I owe them $104.95, apparently they say my bank is not releasing the monthly payment of $21.53 from my account. I have not gone to the gym in exactly two years now, but have been lazy to send off the cancelation request. So since then they have been just taking out the $21.53 from my account. Since October I began to notice that I was not being charged, so I did not think anything of it.
What should I do, I no longer go to the gym, do I pay the $104.95? Or do I take advantage and send the cancellation form to cancel and close my account? I called my bank and they do not know why they have not charged me the $21.53. Please help, I very anal that this will affect my credit history.
I'd say pay it then cancel. This was a service you signed up to pay for whether you used it or not. Paying in a lump sum is kinda rough but it makes you realize how much money you were wasting by not cancelling.
It's probably a ploy to get you to renew your membership. Call and ask them what's up. I know Bally's total fitness sends "bills" that look like regular bills, but are actually just a way to get you to renew your account.
I had the exact same thing happen to me with a local gym. I thought my membership had expired, but they continued to charge me even though they couldn't withdraw that amount from my account because my account number had changed.
I was dealing with a very small company and so I just dealt with one person the whole time, but she was willing to take off half of my charges. I'm not sure if Gold's is willing to do the same, but it's worth it to call and ask. Just explain that you had no idea you were being billed and thought you were no longer a member and see what they can do.
