I am attending a high-level holiday party for work tonight. The dress code is BUSINESS. They said men should dress for GQ and women for ELLE, whatever that means.
I was planning on wearing a suit, but jazzing it up a little with some red or gold or something holiday-ish.
I have a plain black suit, light gray, medium gray with pinstripes and brown.
Any ideas? I don't want to look too stuffy. I want to look put-together, professional and stylish all at the same time.
I think the attire instructions are weird to begin with. I don't remember seeing too many business outfits in the pages of Elle. I'd also go with a dress. Is that a possibility?
here's what I did recently with the same situation... it was my second meeting at the prospective employer. I didn't want to fool anyone about how my business attire is not always conservative.
I wore a black boat neck ellen tracy jacket belted with my fendi belt, a black pencil skirt with bronze pinstripes, and bronze/black textured tights and bronze manolos. I also wore a crazy patchwork (like crazy quilt patchwork) coat with bronzes/pinks/tweeds/grays/blacks - the lining is iridescent pinkish bronze fabric. That's what I wore. It was creative professional IMO. I was also told I didn't have to come in so dressy - that was the impression they had - I told them I didn't mind and I thought I would have fun with my outfit. I got the job, so I must not have been too unbusinesslike
so have fun with suit separates and add fun accessories. try a fun belt over your jacket, complementing skirt, fun hosiery, and fun shoes.

Skirt suits or pants? If you've got a black skirt suit, try it with a spangly top and black or nude fishnets. Or the black pencil skirt, dressy sweater or satin blouse, with 'nets or other patterned stockings.
I would wear the black suit (assuming its very tailored and a skirtsuit) with textured hose and a satin jewel-tone blouse like this:
I would wear great dangly earrings and a gold clutch. Sort of "fabulous conservative". You can take off the jacket to look more sexy/festive if you wish.
