DH and I are going to a friend's New Years party, the theme for dress is "fifties lounge style." I have no idea what this means. Can anyone help me out with some outfit suggestions?
I have this BCBG dress, but it's black and has a halter. I was thinking of wearing it, but it's not really "fifties" or "lounge." Also, for those of you who know men's fashion, what should DH wear? TIA!
I did a brief search for 1950's lounge. Some people that I found that you could get ideas from were: Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe, and Grace Kelly. For your husband, Frank Sinatra.
A lot of the dresses were usually fitted at the bust and waist with a full or flowy skirt.
Well, the movie Down with Love was set in 1962 but that's what I think of when I think of 50's lounge (especially the guys). Oh, and I agree with the Marilyn Monroe reference, a dress like her infamous white one would be great.
When I think of the 50s (lounge or no), I think of a fuller skirt. MM's white dress is the epitome, imo. I think something like the BCBG dress but with a fuller skirt would work. You've got the whole MM halter top thing going on, you just need a little bit of a fuller skirt to get the whole look going. Is there a $$$ limit?
Here are my thoughts on 50s lounge:
(maybe too much of a day dress)
Just for starters... I'll keep looking.
ETA: I found this link of Bettie Page type clothing (search of 50s lounge clothing/apparel/style): http://www.daddyos.com/retro/retroldy.html. It might give you some ideas.
blubirde, the $$ limit is about $100, since I spent way, way too much $$$ on Christmas presents. The BCBG dress I have does have a bit of a fuller skirt, I will try and post a pic of the actual dress tonight when I get home. The party invite (which I got after starting this thread) says crushed velvet suits, cocktail dresses, etc. The crowd that is having the party tends to be a bit edgier (the party is called "Sin Lounge") so I was thinking of wearing the dress w/ fishnets and maybe red platform pumps if I couldn't find anything better.
I love everyone's suggestions! The mall near me just opened a F21, too!
with the halter styling, I think the dress you have with the fishnets and red pumps sounds great. do you have any chunky retro bangle bracelets? I think that might look nice with it as well...
sounds like a fun party

I think that idea sounds perfect. I also like brazilian's idea of the fishnets with the seam up the back. Could you do your hair in a 50s coif of some kind?
See Bettie Page:
Marilyn:
Lucille Ball:
Judy Garland:
Natalie Wood, etc. You get the picture. A cool hairdo would definitely make the dress appropriate, imo.
I think you could totally rock the first look. Definately do the 50's hair and red lipstick and you will be all set. The second look is too contemporary.
I think you look really great in the first outfit!

Oh, please don't do the safe option. The party has a theme, go with it! Enjoy wearing something you wouldn't normally. Be daring. That's what parties are for. :)
