question about returned gift
Permalink Closed

I bought a token gift for my son's best friend. It was a t shirt that I thought he would really like, but it was a size Large. The recipient opened the gift early, and then emailed me that he appreciated the thought, but the t-shirt didn't fit. I emailed him back the name of the store that it was from, and told him next year he'll get something different.
The next day my son brought the gift back, and then I returned it to the store.

I don't understand why he returned a t shirt to me - couldn't he have worn it for sleeping or something? Question - Do I need to give him another gift?

thanks for your imput.

kids these days can be flaky and weird. it seems as though their parents teach them absolutely no etiquette.

return the gift and don't buy him another one. he probably feels uncomfortable accepting a gift from you and doesn't know how to handle it. If you feel you would really like to do something, give him a borders gift certificate or something, but don't expect a thank you

I wouldn't get him anything else.  He could have exchanged what you gave him for something else but instead he choose to give it back to you.

How old is this kid? And I'm assuming the shirt is too big?

Hmmm...how old is this kid?  Is he a kid under 12?  A teenager?  Older?  Depending on how old he is I'd say he didn't know any better, but since he emailed you, I'm guessing he's probably at least in his teens, which would mean he's old enough to know better and maybe just felt weird about it.  In that case, I wouldn't get him anything to replace it.  But if he's younger, he may not have known any better and in that case I'd exchange it and get him something else.

It sounds as if he just doesn't know what to do.  Maybe he thought you would actually exchange it for him.

How old is he?

maybe he thought he couldn't return/exchange it without the receipt? or maybe he couldn't get to the store (not sure ofthe age)?

Weird! Have you mentioned this to your son to see what he thinks? The recipient might have thought the shirt couldn't be returned without the receipt like other ladies have suggested, so you may want to just return it and then after consulting with your son potentially purchase a gift card or something like that.
