Favorite Holiday Hors D'oeuvres?
Permalink Closed

I'm having a small party later this week and am planning to make some baked brie as well as sausage-stuffed mushrooms, which are two of my all-time favorite hors d'oeuvers. For drinks there will be some mulled wine and Baileys hot chocolate, plus beer.

But I want to have a few other easy hors d'oeuvres -- hot or cold, sweet or savory -- on hand, especially for picky eaters. Any suggestions? I'm ideally looking for additional dishes that would involve very little prep time and cost.

Steamed asparagus wrapped in proscuitto.  It is delicious, easy and still pretty cute to look at.

I'm also a big fan of sugar cookies - your own or store bought :)

I made this dip this past weekend for a holiday gathering and it was terrific.  You can either roast your own peppers or purchase them already roasted either in a jar or at an olive bar at a place like Whole Foods. I served it with toasted pita chips and cut carrots. Ymmm!!

Roasted Red Pepper, Feta and Yogurt Dip

Get the recipe for Toasted Pita Sticks. Total Time: 10 minutes
Makes: about 2 cups

2 large roasted red peppers
8 oz. plain low fat yogurt
1/3 c. crumbled feta
8 leaves fresh basil
1 clove garlic
1 tsp. oregano
1 Tbsp.  Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1/2 tsp. raw cane sugar

Place ingredients in a food processor and pulse until smooth. Adjust seasonings to taste.

My favorite - roasted garlic and tomato dip:

Just take 2 whole heads of garlic and chop off the tips so they're exposed. Put them in a casserole dish along with 2-3 Roma tomatoes, quartered. Drizzle w/ olive oil. Cover and bake at 425 for 45 min. Squeeze out garlic into bowl, peel skin off tomatoes, mash both. Mix with 8 oz. softened chive & onion cream cheese.

My favorites are the stuffed dates my aunt used to make.  I make them all the time now for holidays and practically as soon as I set out the platter, *poof!* they're gone.

They're super easy to make:

Using a paring knife, cut open a whole pitted date.  Stuff the dates with a little cream cheese and top with 1/2 a walnut or pecan.  Done!

p.s. Jrhampt, what do you serve with your dip -- cracker-type things or veggies? And if veggies, what kinds?

I just use crackers/chips.  My sister uses her own beer bread with it, which she claims is super-easy to make, but I don't have the recipe for it offhand.
