Semi-formal holiday party outfit
Permalink Closed

I'm going to a holiday party with DH in a couple of days and I'm a bit anxious because I'm not sure what I'm going to wear. The dress code is semi-formal - does that mean a cocktail dress?

It's going to be a three and a half hour cruise off Manhattan and will include dinner, drinks and dancing. This is my very first holiday party in the US so I don't really know what people usually wear to things like this, and I have never met any of my hubby's co-workers. Ugh, why does this have to be so nerve-wracking!

I have this knee-length silk dress in espresso from J.Crew. Could I wear it to the party or is it too dressy? I'd really appreciate any and all opinions!

Would tights look ok with the dress, something similar to this Anthro pic maybe?

I think that that dress is perfect for a semi-formal holiday party / cruise!

I think the dress is perfect. Wine colored (or maybe green if you're brave) would look great with a brown dress.

And yeah, I think semi-formal is cocktail or maybe a little less. Your dress will definitely work, especially if you fancy it up with some sparkly jewelry.

That dress would definitely work, and I like the idea of tights with it!

Semiformal for evening is fairly strictly defined as party attire, though men need not wear tuxedos and women need not wear floor-length gowns. A dark suit for him and a cocktail dress for you would be appropriate.

I think the dress would be wonderful, maybe with a metallic bronze shoe for holiday sparkle. I don't love the idea of tights. Because it's a work event, you may want to keep it conservative and classic, depending on the type of work he does.

Also remember a hefty coat! A cruise sounds cold.

Thank you for your opinions, everyone! I feel much more confident about dressing for the party now!

And yes, a warm wool coat is a must. I'm sure the boat itself will be warm but I think we might want to take a quick stroll on the deck at some point.
