I'm having a birthday dinner party in a couple of weeks (for myself) with 9 or my nearest and dearest (or those least likely to already have plans the weekend before xmas, whichever). I want it to be as fancy as possible without having to spend a ton of money because I'm currently poor. And I don't want it to be too Christmasy since it's not a Christmas party, but my apartment will already be decorated for Christmas so I'm not opposed to the colors or lights or anything. Just no baby Jesus (what's the plural of baby Jesus?) or xmas trees or anything like that.

I have the dishes - all clear, swirly glass. I have the wine glasses - mainly clear, a couple blue and purple ones (oddly I had to borrow dishes from my mom but I had enough wine glasses). I may buy a couple more glasses to make them all clear since that's not terribly expensive and it appears I use them a lot...

I'm planning on black tablecloths with some interesting black and white patterned fabric overlays. So what else?

I saw on Martha Stewart an idea for a Winter Wonderland party where you wrap white lights in white tulle and drape them over the window, which works perfectly for me because I have no curtains in the dining area but lovely rods (don't ask).

What about a centerpiece for the table? I want something elegant but with a fun flair. I'd prefer something I can make myself to save pennies. Any websites I could look at (besides Martha Stewart - already been there)? Any ideas from previous parties?

Oh and the food is going to be Italian/Tuscan with a Greek salad. And lots of wine. Hee.

Help, please!!

I think something like this would be great (and inexpensive!!) Just a few glass bowls and pretty Christmas ornaments

A simple pedestal bowl.

I think floating candles are always really pretty and you can get them for pretty cheap. Plus, you can get one of those plastic pointsettia plants, pull it apart, and line a few of the blossoms around the bowl.

Pier One has some cute confetti that are little bitty presents (think actual little square boxes).  They are a mixture of colors, not all red/green & they would be fun scattered on your table.

Here's a pic - sorry it's huge.

I love anything with candles...if it were me I'd probably just group of candles in varying heights and put them all together...just make sure not to get the scented kind, or else it'll interfere with the taste of the food!

What do you guys think of floating cranberries in glass vases? Too old ladyish? Not striking enough?
