health/weight vent (a little long)

I am so fat right now and it is really pissing me off.  None of my clothes fit and I feel totally gross!!

A little over a year ago, I mysteriously gained about 10 lbs in a month.  It was really strange because I really hadn't changed anything; I was eating really well and working out 5 or 6 times/week.  I was diagnosed w/ a thyroid disorder.  I'm hypothyroid, so my metabolism has slowed down a lot.  I went on thyroiod meds, but the meds were causing me so many horrible side effects that I kept having to change dosages and types of treatment.  One of my side effects was that I developed severe hypoglycemia.  I couldn't go more than maybe an hour without having something to eat or I would get really lightheaded and shaky.  I often felt like I was on the verge of passing out.  I had to stop working out because any extra activity would make the lightheadedness worse, I couldn't even go for a short walk.

So now, it has been around 16 months since I was originally diagnosed.  I'm on meds that seem to be working, and the hypoglycemia has gotten a lot better.  I still have to be really careful about eating regularly and I can only work out for a short time.  My doctor thinks that is going to continue to get better.

But, over this whole time I've gained almost 30lbs!  I've been trying to have a positive attitude and think that feeling better is more important than being slim, I certainly wouldn't want to live with the constant dizziness and exhaustion again.  But, I hate this!  I hate that none of my clothes fit.  I hate feeling totally gross.  And, I really hate that I can't cut calories much or even work out for more than 20 minutes.  So frustrating!

Anyway, I just needed to vent.  I was really pissed off this morning because I had a hard time finding an outfit that didn't make me look like a stuffed sausage.  Seriously, I'm this close to wearing my husband's oversized sweatshirts every day, and becoming a "what not to wear" candidate is not an option!

awwww, luckilily, that's hard. It's like you're in a catch-22. It sounds like your doctor is optimistic, thought - which is a good thing!

Maybe you could try Yoga? It wouldn't be as intense to wear you out as easily, and if you build up some muscles from that the extra calories wouldn't affect you as much.

Wow. I am so sorry to hear this!

ttara's suggestion of yoga is a good one. What about food substitution? I realize you need food regularly. Have you done any research as to whether or not there are healthy substitutes for what you normally eat (but ones that will still keep you feeling ok)?

A friend of mine just found out she has the same issue. Please let us know what you come up with. Good luck and hang in there! It will get better!

I can truly sympathize.  I have PCOD.  Late last year I let my blood sugars get out of control and I went from a size 12 to a 20. I'm back down to a 16 now, but don't seem to be able to drop any lower.  I don't have any great advice to offer, but I am truly sorry you are having a hard time.

do you mean PCOS? I have that, too. I'm managing to keep myself pretty slim in a size 7, but it takes work and I also know I'm one of the lucky ones to even be able to do that. My mom has it, too. At least we can exercise

Why are there so many diseases that want beautiful women to be fat?!?!

Yeah, this whole thing has made me a lot less judgement.  You never know what someone might be going through that isn't obvious at first glance.  There are just some things that are out of your control.

What is PCOD/S?

PCOS is polycystic ovarian syndrome. I have a bunch of cysts in my ovaries, but it's actually more complicated than just that. Apparently (I don't know all the real technical stuff, but just a general overview), it has something to do with the way my body processes insulin. Whatever it does, it doesn't do it the correct way, which makes gaining weight horrendously easy and kind of inevitable. Also, for some reason that insulin resistance also results in messed up hormone production, which is what causes the cysts to form - they form around eggs that get stuck in your fallopian tubes. I went to the doctor because my period had always been super erratic, sometimes lasting up to 3 weeks, and sometimes not coming for months...but once I didn't have it for over a year and thought that needed some checking out!

It does a lot of other annoying stuff to your body, but that's the jist of it.

It's definitely made me less judgemental of other people, too. I know a lot of people are overweight because their only exercise is lifting the hamburger up to their mouth - but what I'm realizing more and more is that, for a lot of people, it's a medical condition or a big group of them.

I hope that wasn't too long - but just saying "I have cysts in my ovaries" doesn't explain the whole weight issue

luckylili, I really feel for you

last summer, right before my sister's wedding, I gained a lot of weight b/c of stress . Stress is not as bad as your condition, but I understand how annoying is to gain weight without doing anything wrong. And how frustrating is to feel every single piece of clothing you own is tight!!!

The girls have some wonderful suggestions, such as yoga, or food substitution.

I have 2 more suggestions: walk whenever/wherever you can. Don't know where you leave, but I am able to walk outside even during the winter, here in Buffalo, so if you want you'll be able to. During the week-end, find some beautiful parks around where you leave, or go explore nice areas where you can stroll, and may be do some window shoppig. And try to move whenever you can - it adds up, and it's not as exausting as working out at the gym.

bug, bug, BUG you doctor to learn how/what you shoudl eat to loose the weight, if there are foods that can improuve your condition, or just to be referred to a nutritionist. May be you won't lose 30 lb, but you might still lose some weight and feel better in the process.

I really hope everything will work out fine for you

Thanks everyone for your support and ideas.

ttara and loving life - The PCOS sounds equally awful.  I'm sorry you have to deal with that.

ico - Thanks for the reminder about walking.  I kind of got out of the habit when the dizziness was really bad.  And, now I'm pretty busy feeling sorry for myself.  This morning I got of my bus 5 blocks early, so I at least walked a little.

My doctor has been pretty helpful as far as guiding how I eat.  She's made a huge difference.  I'm trying to get in to see a nutritionist, but my insurance co is really hassling me about it.  Grrrr!  If they don't come through soon, I'm going to buck up and pay for it myself.

That sucks! My insurance paid for me to see a nutritionist when I started on some medication that's very sensitive to how I eat....but maybe it's because she was kind of part of the whole practice my doctor belongs to? Still, if your medicine is doing this to you they should definitely pay for it.

Gosh girl that sounds really frustrating!!!!!

I have delt with a similiar situation and this has really helped me -

1.) I have cut out all starchy foods and sugars. By avoiding breads and boxed food , and eating protien more often I am less hungry and dont get the "lightheadness" as often anymore.

2.) Weight lifting. Instead of doing intense cardio workout like I used to , I took a simple class at the gym on how to use the weight machines and it has totally changed how I excersise. You can burn so many more calories lifting weights and it doesnt cause me to have that "I am going to pass out" feeling.

Other than that, I think its important to focus on the things you love about yourself. Remember we ALL have things we dislike about our bodies.

I hope you find a medication that starts working for you :) Keep us posted!!!

Sorry, so slow to reply.  My poor hubby had his appendix rupture and I've been 24/7 at the hospital with him for a week.

PCOS -- same thing.  One doc keeps saying the "syndrome" and the other calls it "disease."  I actually had the gestational diabetes with my last full term pregnancy.  (We lost 2 before that and 2 since.)

It has definitely made me more careful about how I "think" of peoples' sizes.
