Birth Control question
Permalink Closed

I've never been on birth control before. It's not against my religion or anything like that....I just never needed it. I'll be delivering my first child in just a couple of months and the hubby and I don't want another child for at least a year. I've heard once you've had one it's much easier to get pregnant again so I'm thinking I should go on birth control. So is there anything in particular I should look for? Or is it all pretty much the same? Also if I decide to nurse will birth control have any effects with this?

Well, my first recommendation is to talk to your doctor about it...

But, in my opinion, not all birth control is the same...

There are lower dose pills, patches, and a variety of levels of hormones.  I was on ortho-tricyclen for years and just wasn't any good at remembering the pills.  Now I am on orthoevra, the patch...I love it.  I don't have to remember a pill everyday.

Some people worry about the patch and the increased risk for blood clots and stroke, but I discussed it with my doc and with my family history and health status, we were both comfortable using it.

You may have to try a few different kinds until you decide what works best for you.

i just wanted to add to what kari said - i don't believe you can take the pill if you're nursing. at least, the pills i'm on always have a "do not take if you are pregnant or nursing" sticker on them.

definitely discuss it with your doctor, they'll recommend what would work best for you.

There are some low dose BC that you can take while nursing, I'm not sure which ones but your dr will know.  I've been wondering about you, how's everything going?

I always thought that you naturally didn't ovulate while nursing... did I make that up?

I don't know if there's anything in particular you should look for, but you might have to try a few different kinds. I've been on Ortho tri-cyclen from the start and I've always been okay on it... but I've had a few friends who got really emotional and a little crazy on certain pills and had to switch around until they found one they could tolerate.

definately ask your doctor! There are so may different pills and then there is also the patch and the shot. Your doctor will def. be able to tell you which is best for you!

...and that's how Irish Twins happen !  You can definitely get pregnant while nursing, especially if you're supplementing at all.  If you want a BC pill for after you give birth and you want to nurse, your doc will likely prescribe the 'mini pill'.  It's progesterone only, because estrogen affects milk supply.  You won't be able to use the patch or the shot until you're finished nursing because both contain estrogen.

If you're planning on more than a year or so between kids, you could also talk to your doctor about an IUD.  They're much easier to insert after you've had a child, and can be done at your 6 wk postpartum appointment.  Then you wouldn't have to worry about pills at all, and could just have it removed when you're ready to start trying again.  Your doc probably wouldn't recommend it if you plan to space your kids closely though, so that would be something to discuss.

Thanks for all the info I definately will ask my dr. I just wanted some outside opinions beforehand.

Thanks FP I've been good...just really busy. We bought our new house and are finally all moved in now so I should have time to get on a little more now. Congrats on the baby! I'm really excited for you
