party ideas needed — here's the invite:
Permalink Closed

i am throwing a very small baby shower (7 ladies total) for my girlfriend in a few weeks. i thought mailing a single giant fortune cookie with the shower info as the fortune would be a super cute idea (i guess it's a bonus that my friend is chinese?) anyway... here are invites so you get the idea.

the shower will be at my house. i need to come up with an idea for food (we will be having lunch) and favors. i was thinking of ordering a few takeout dishes from PF Changs (yummy gormet chinese) but i'd also like to make at least one dish and a dessert. i also need ideas for favors. i'm SO burnt out on ideas right now — i'm also throwing a huge birthday party for my son the week before this shower and my mind is a creative blank right now. the ideas don't have to totally follow the theme but if it loosely and tastefully ties in it'd be perfect. i'd love you forever for any ideas you have for me. :)

Those are the cutest ever! What about ginger-glazed poached pears? i dont' have a recipe, but it's a classic, so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Here's what I'm thinking, to continue the Chinese theme:

from pearlrivermart.com

is the baby going to be born in 2007? Then perhaps include Year of the Pig items in the favors.

and who can resist the finger trap

and I love loose tea, not sure if your friends drink loose tea, but the tins are so pretty, and jasmine tea is fantastic.

for dessert or something else to make, you can do almond cakes:

Almond Cakes Recipe (Cookies)Almond Cookies

What would a page of Chinese dessert recipes be without an authentic almond cookie recipe? Now you can enjoy the almond cookies once enjoyed by the highest mandarin of Shanghai.

Two cupfuls of rice flour; one-quarter cupful of almond oil; one-half cupful of chopped almonds; one and one-half cupfuls of powdered sugar; two eggs.

Mix thoroughly two cupfuls of rice flour, one and one-half cupfuls of powdered sugar, and half a cupful of blanched almonds, chopped very fine, with a quarter of a cupful of almond oil. Moisten with two beaten eggs. Use no water, and if too stiff, add more egg. Roll about a quarter of an inch thick, and cut in fanciful shapes. Place half an almond in the center of each cake, and bake them for one hour in a moderate oven. These cakes are certain to keep for a long time if they are placed in a tin box.

You could also try a more Asian-influenced fruit platter, since most traditional Chinese dinners end with fruit and not dessert. Perhaps melon, mandarin oranges, lychees, plums, hmm, what else? Or maybe a fortune cookie recipe, but with different flavorings added like cinnamon and vanilla. You could probably shape the fortune cookie into different shapes as well, like a flower.

Hope that at least helps to get the creative juices flowing! I love the fortune cookie invite, by the way. They look so pretty.

The invites are Precious!!

Emily's chocolate covered fortune cookies

lenox silver fortune cookie-- i gave one to my hubby to send "special messages" to Camille and me on special occasions--b-day, Xmas stocking, etc.

I have seen some really cute place settings and favors with chopsticks.

How about mini spring rolls, dumplings, an exotic tea bar (decaf too). These glass tea pots with the tea that looks like a flower are cool. I will see if I can find a better picture. Very pretty on the table.

flower tea

For a different favor- possibly burn a cd with fun easy listening songs for mom and baby like Jack Johnson, James Taylor for naptime

dizzy and relrel — !

i love these ideas. the ginger glazed poached pears sound great. i'm pretty sure i even have a recipe for them. and the loose jasmine tea idea is something i'm certainly going to think about, maybe the jasmine pearls packaged in a delicate little cup tied up with a ribobn with a pig shaped tag on it (love the year of the pig idea)

i actually have to make a few more of the fortune cookies tonight (they are SO incredibly difficult to make) i only need 6 to mail out and my recipe makes about 15... i screwed up 10 of 15 last night! i need one more to mail and a few for keepsakes.

has anyone ever made fortune cookies before? i made some years ago and i don't remember them being this difficult! i need some tips if anyone has any.

and more ideas too!

love the tea bar idea. i'm a tea junkie so i certainly have the tea stash to pull it off. i'd need one of those glass teapots though!

i am a dork and i tear out instyle magazine's party ideas, and one was for an asian-themed oscar party.  i also bought the instyle parties book because i love their presentations and their ideas.  they're classy themed parties without being cheesy.

there are a ton of great ideas for the party.  a couple i remember are:

  • order take out (you have that covered)

  • have fans (relrel suggested that)

  • have slippers available for the guests (i think that's cute)

  • the party was red/black themed

  • serve star fruit as dessert

i'll post more when i get access to the book (later tonight)or depending on when the party is, i can photocopy and mail you the recipes/pictures of decor if you want.  i will have a copy machine/be at the post office tomorrow morning if you let me know tonight.

I tried making fortune cookies a few years ago for a project and it was a disaster.  They were pretty awful .  (Funny story: all the little circles of dough melted together.  I tried to cut them into circles again but they kept falling apart because they were a weird consistency.  I don't know why but I put them in the microwave to soften them a bit and they were so hot that I dropped about 1/2 of them on the floor trying to get them out.  Finally, I gave up made dough balls instead of fortune cookies, but they tasted awful.  It was a tramautic experience.) That said, I know you are a way better cook than I am and I didn't really know what I was doing.  I ended up taking the easy way out and just bought some from a Chinese grocery store.

You could give money envelopes away as gifts. According to this website,"Traditionally, the Chinese red envelope holds lucky coins or a small gift. It is given to bring good luck, prosperity, and happiness to the recipient, as well as to the giver. " A friend of mine is Chinese and his mom always gives him one before he travels.

ETA: This website www.asianideas.com has a lot of cute favors and decorations if you still need more ideas. Plus they have silver fortune cookie place card holders (like the one mikacat posted on sale for $1.75 each.

thank you everyone for your ideas. i'm certainly going to use some of them and check out some of the websites that were suggested for more ideas. i'm going to pick up some starfruit for after lunch (thanks for the reminder shopgirl82)

theotherjess — i made another batch of fortune cookies yesterday and they came out beautiful! i threw all of my previous batch away and used the new ones. they turned out absolutely perfect! if you ever want to take another stab at making the cookies i'll give you my recipe with my tips. with this batter/dough you must follow the ingredient list precisely and i forgot to sift the flour the first time around plus i tried to get away with using meringue powder as a substitute for egg whites. those two things spelled disaster for sure.

i'm very excited about the favors — i'll post pics once they are assembled.
