Online Shopping - Lost Package Q
Permalink Closed

I started my xmas shopping a few weeks ago with online shopping.  So far 7 out of the 8 packages have arrived without problem.  But the 8th package is the problem.

I received a note from USPS that I received a package last wednesday.  Due to working late and other commitments I was not able to go to my apt office and pick it up until this morning.  Well of course it is now missing!!!    This isn't the first time a package has mysteriously come up missing either.

Apt management won't do anything about it because I can't prove that it was ever checked into the office even though I have a slip from USPS and it is in their stupid binder that the delivery people use to check packages into.  Basically they are throwing the responsibility back onto me and USPS.  Well I bought the package off of half.com (ebay) which does not give the option of insurance or delivery confirmation because everything ships Media Mail via USPS (because its the cheapest way).  So I know asking the seller for a confirmation number is worthless but I am planning to ask because I always send my packages with it since the shipping reimbursement is usually more than the actual shipping on the item and to avoid messes like this.

So I guess my question is what do I do after the seller gets back to me that they didn't purchase DC on the item?  Do I file an item not received claim?  Would it be wrong of me since I don't know if they sent it or not or if my apt ever had it or not?  I mean at this point its 50-50 as to whether it actually got to the apt or not.  I am going to keep checking all this week with the apt on the package.

Any advice would be appreciated.  I really don't want to screw anyone over but I don't think I'll ever see this package which means then I am out what I bought and the money I spent.

I think you should pursue submitting a claim to UPS.  The complex cannot be liable unless you have an agreement with your apartment complex in writing that they will take responsibility for packages claimed.  When you file a claim with UPS, they will investigate with the apartment complex. Also, I think there is at least $100 coverage with any UPS package... I'd quit trying to work it out and just go through the motions with a claim.

Thanks D.  I see you wrote about UPS.  Is USPS (postal service) the same way??

oh, shoot - USPS is different. There's not automatic coverage - do you know if the package was insured or just signature required?

yeah, it needs to be insured to file a claim - signaure required doesn't cut it.

How to File Insurance Claims

Here’s how you can recover the value of your lost or damaged shipments.

If your insured shipment, whether Insurance was purchased online or at a Post Office, has been lost or damaged in transit you can request to recover the value of your articles by filing an insurance claim at any Post Office.

Domestic Claims

Shipments mailed domestically (to or from any address in the United States) . APO/FPO shipments included.

Claims for all services, except Merchandise Return Service can be filed at any Post Office. Merchandise Return Service claims can only be filed at the Post Office where the Merchandise Return permit is held.

Download PS Form 1000, Domestic Claim or Registered Mail Inquiry, and complete the customer portion. You may submit the completed form to any U.S. Post Office.

With the completed claims form you will need to provide evidence of Insurance and evidence of value.

Depending on the type of claim, you will need to provide proof of damage, proof of loss, or partial loss of contents.

I don't know how much you're out on the purchase, but if you find that you cannot submit a claim to USPS, you can take your apt. complex to small claims court with the proof that they received it, and that the loss was incurred due to their negligence.

Thanks D.  Its only $20 so its not too big of a deal but still makes me mad!!  Half.com says to give it till 11/27 so maybe I will luck out and the package will arrive and a different one ordered through an actual store arrived early and got lost (best case) so then it may be insured or trackable.  Crossing fingers since this is such a pain in the butt.

I'm contacting the seller but since its a huge store type seller I'm thinking there is a) no way they would have insured or tracked it b) that they may just ignore me c) that they really don't care because 1000+ positives to a few items not received won't matter to them.

IMO - $20 is not worth the time and effort to pursue this further (unless it's insured, which I doubt.) It's also not the seller's fault - they did what they were supposed to do and have no control over your apt. complex's negligence and do not deserve negative feedback.

I agree. I don't know what I'd do, but the seller did send it, so I'd get on your apt complex's case, not the seller's. I guess you've exhausted talking to everyone at the office?

Then... I don't know what to do Maybe you could go back to the apt complex when a different receptionist/mail person is working? I kind of had a problem like this at my old apt, I was expecting a package and never got the little slip that says I have a package. I asked the guy if he could check and see if I got a package anyway, and he said no. A few weeks later I had a slip for a different package, and a different lady was at the desk. When she retrieved the first package, she magically found the one that the other guy said didn't exist.

That's kinda the plan I have.  I have another package I remembered about that should be coming this week DHL via USPS.  So when I go to claim it (I called DHL already on it - it should be delivered today) I'm going to check with the other person about the first package.  Its just so frustrating because its only with the one girl that packages mysteriously disappear and no one will do anything about it.  I think in the future I'm only online shopping from sites where I know insurance and tracking numbers are used.  I don't want to chance non-insured packages getting "lost".

Aurora, whenever I buy from an individual, I always make sure it's insured if my purchase is $20 or more. Murphy's law, you know? it's only $1.30 and your butt is covered.
