Christmas gifts for dad

Can we start a post with ideas for dads for Christmas?

I am convinced that my dad is the hardest person in the world to shop for.  He's 62, has everything he needs, likes fishing and airplanes, doesn't like golf, spends 1/2 his time in NC and 1/2 in CA (thus no Netflix or magazine subscriptions), doesn't smoke cigars or drink, is extremely social (no iPods for him!), and luxuries are completely lost on him.

Any ideas?  Also, feel free to post other ideas for other dads--I'm sure someone on here will appreciate it.

This is the perenially difficult question. Men are SO hard to buy presents for! Some of the presents I've gotten for my dad in recent years that seem like they've been hits include:
-a "fancy" crock pot
-a subscription to Smithsonian Magazine
-a George Foreman grill
-DVDs and books
-sweaters and ties from Dad's favorite stores -- Brooks Brothers and J Press
-tickets to concerts
-new pajamas, robe and slippers from other Dad stores -- Eddie Bauer and LL Bean
-an antique map of the town where he grew up

This year I'm kind of at a loss and might end up getting him some of the typical clothing items, but I'm not sure. I was contemplating getting him Tivo.

How about a gift card to a place he could go fishing or a place where they have a showcase of airplanes? Does he drive between NC and CA? If he does how about a satellite radio?

My dad sounds exactly like your and he loves his XM radio whenever we go on trips.

HTH!!

My dad is hard to buy for, too.

He seems to really appreciate sentimental gifts, like a coffee table book about the town he grew up in and an adorable photo booth strip of his mom and him when he was about 6 years old that my brother found and framed in a nice antique frame from the same time period (I think he actually cried when he opened that up - he never cries).

Also,
- cds and books that he specifically asks for
- he also likes art deco antiques
- a gift certificate for a dept. store
- a Bose stereo that the kids went in on together
- dvd player

This year I may try to go in with my siblings for a wine cooler thingy. I haven't priced that out yet, but we'll see. The parents are becoming wine enthusiasts in their retirement.

I was also going to suggest a GC to a nice sporting goods store that sells quality quality fishing equipment.  My brother in law is also mucho hard to buy for and is an avid outdoor sports guy so that is what he is getting from me.

My dad is a little easier - he is getting a nice Chicago Bears tee and sweatshirt.  He is always appreciative of new team gear.

My dad collects pocket knives, so last year I found a guy that hand makes them and had one made. He loved it.

I think all men (at least those in the South) have a thing for pocket knives, they're almost the equivalent of a new handbag...

Is this guy in Oklahoma?  Can I get some details?  I was wondering price and how to contact them?  Feel free to PM me!  Thanks!!

He was in NE Oklahoma, a small town called Jay which isn't far from you I believe, the knives are called "Slim Knives" (his nickname is Slim). Unfortunately he doesn't make them anymore, he's very, very, old and in poor health, in fact Dad's was one of the last he made...but I do have some information about another knife maker from the same area, I don't think he makes pocket knives, but smaller field knives. My Dad has one of these as well and loves it...I think they range from $80-100...If you'll pm me your e-mail I'll send you the pics of his current knives and other information.

hope this helps!

Thanks for all the ideas ladies!

My dad isn't a sports guy, but he loves bluegrass, so I'm thinking maybe I'll see about getting him tickets to a concert or something.

Jahni, you've got me thinking about pocket knives now.  He's never really carried one because he's an airline pilot, but maybe he might like one to have on his boat.  Hmmm....

This year I got him postage stamps with his dog's face on them and a digital picture frame. He has no grandkids so he loves his little puppy girl!
