Do you develop emotional attachments to clothes?
Permalink Closed

Okay, obviously we are all in love with clothes and shoes here. But how emotional are you about your clothes? I found a dress in the back of my closet that I hadn't worn in forever, and I put it on to wear out with my boyfriend. But an ex of mine really loved that dress on me, and I also wore it on a very...erm, special night for us early in our relationship. So I couldn't bring myself to wear it out with my new BF, even though it looks great on me. I think the dress may have to be retired to storage, so I can keep and love it, but I'll never wear it.

Who else does this? Do you put a lot of emotion into clothes? I kind of don't realize I'm doing it, until for some reason I can't wear a certain outfit anymore or in certain situations.

Oh yes. I definitley have emotional attachments to certain items. There are things that I can never wear becasue they remind me of a certain person or time in my life.

I have this one pair of jeans that reminds me of my ex-best friend and even though they are in tatters, I will keep them for ever.

I do have some emotional attachment to some pieces; most of these pieces are from my parent's closets. The newer stuff I couldn't really careless about except for the leather motorcycle jacket that my bf got me. I will never get rid of this stuff, it is just too important to me.

I don't have any pieces that I feel awkward wearing because of memories attached to them. I guess I just don't really associate most of my clothes with people or events.

Absolutely!  I have a dress that I wore a lot early on in my relationship with DH - it is pretty dated and my style has evolved a ton - but I don't think I will ever get rid of it.  I don't get strong attachments very often...but when I do...I'll probably have that dress forever!

I don't think there is anything in my closet that I have an emotional attachment to.

I used to. I had a few pieces that I associated w/ my ex boyfriend and just couldn't bring myself to part with. A few months ago I realized I was being ridiculous because I am no longer w/ him. I sold a lot of it on eBay. I did keep one or two things.

Oh yes, I def. have emotional attachments to some of my clothes. I found TWO bride's maids dresses, from my BFF and another girlfriend of mine, they still fit, but I can't, but will let them go, sell them on craiglist. Even my high school letterman jacket. I don't wear it, but I'm NOT letting it go either! LOL

which one is that?

for me, I don't really have attachments--the only things I've kept for emotional reasons are a couple of dresses my mother hand made for me when I was little. For a while I had saved things like my bridesmaid's dress for my cousin's wedding, my favorite slinky evening dress from college that I would not now be caught dead in (KH, it was the really long stretchy black one with the silver glittery zebra print vibe--remember it? I think I wore it to Currier Club a couple of times...), and some others, but I pitched them when I moved. I purged ruthlessly at that move. For me, purging that stuff is just part of the mentality I've had to develop in response to NYC space shortage: anything that's not essential has to go.

SB - I'm racking my brain, but I don't recall the dress...I feel like we had so many black dresses back then Mine is the little salmon pink sheath with beading that I wore for the senior dance.  I wore it to a ton of weddings and parties between 2000 and 2003, but then it sort of sat further and further back in my closet until I accepted that I wouldn't wear it anymore, and that's OK.  I should also add my wedding dress and veil in there :)  Those are gorgeous but I don't foresee wearing them again!

I thought that was it! I remember when you bought that. I have pictures of us from the senior dinner dance where you are wearing it. (Pictures with Jess Coffin in them, cause we were still friends with her at that point...)

I don't really have emotional attachments, but I do mourn clothes that have gone missing or gotten destroyed. For instance, I had this great, classic black sweater that went missing when I moved in the summer of 2000. Then there was my fake fur collared winter coat. I still have it but the detachable collar is missing.

Also, last year I had the perfect chunky turtleneck and in a moment of laziness, I decided to wash it on the delicate cycle instead of taking it to the cleaners. Well, it shrunk like 3 sizes. I still think every cold day how great it would be if I had that sweater.

I'm like Calichic, I'm not likely to have such a strong association with other people, so much as an association with how a particular thing made me feel. And if that feeling was good, I may find it hard to get rid of the item.

For example, I refuse to give up a pair of Carole Little silky paisley print pants from the early 90s. Once when I was wearing them, a homeless guy said "There goes Happy Pants!" as I walked by. And from that point forward, I always did feel somehow happy whenever I was wearing them!

yes, there is a blue dress with big sunflowers all over it that I was wearing the day I met my husband. I also wore it on our first real date (a month after we met and hung out)

also, the Max Studio black, mock neck, short sleeve, long dress I wore when I got married. It was my favorite dress at the time, so that's what I wore

there is also a navy velvet, off shoulder, long sleeve, tea length dress with satin roses all the way around the top that I wore when I was really young, really thin, and really beautiful on new year's eve with an insanely attractive guy that I was head over heels in love with at the time.  I turned a lot of heads and felt like the belle of the ball. That's way in the back of my garment storage in the basement...

ALL the time. Even clothes that don't fit me anymore. It's rather sad, actually, but I've accepted it.
