Venting: Holiday Shopping.

i'm not sure where i should post this.

so today i'm itching to go "real" shopping, but

a) i've been really good lately with my money because i have some big purchases planned for the future so the just going shopping for stuff i don't really need doesn't really happen anymore (i'm not sure i'm 100% happy with this new money mentality......i miss shopping, although not the regret from impulse buys).  and when i used to go christmas shopping it was always 2 for me, one for you, and i just don't want to do that this year so i'm just avoiding it...

b) i should be spending any shopping money on christmas gifts because there's nothing i really need right now, or for that matter really love right now.

c) downtown shopping is just full of tourists who stop in the middle of the sidewalks for no reason and even if i'm not in a big hurry, it just makes shopping that much more time consuming and annoying (i need to learn to be more tolerant of slow walkers).

d) the main reason....i plan on buying most of my gifts online because i can only find the items online, or i can find much better prices online.

anyone else feel this way or "miss" holiday shopping?

hmmm... I don't know that I miss holiday shopping in-store. I really like that I don't pay tax (most often) online, and don't spend money on gas or use time to travel... Plus, I've found so many good deals this fall (both on-line and in-store), almost all my xmas shopping is done.

On the other hand, some of the deals I got online are going back so I can purchase something in-store (boots for my husband are going back and I'm buying him a 60g ipod at costco ($249! it's a great deal - and he'd rather have that then frye boots))

My husband is also doing some xmas shopping during his current business trip. He bought some things in India for his siblings, and I'm sending him to the pearl mart in Beijing to pick up some gifts for my girlfriends.

I do like to go in-store shopping when all my shopping is done. I have really nice shopping districts nearby, and it's fun to just go mill around during the height of the shopping season, and not feel the pressure to fill a list.

I think I know what you mean.  The past few years I've done all my holiday shopping online since I don't live close to family or friends really.  I miss that feeling of going shopping during the holidays and just having the time to relax and enjoy it.  Although to be honest, I think that feeling was mostly just fond memories of being a kid and going shopping with my mom and looking at all the cool new toys.  Holiday shopping seems so much more stressful and hurried now that I'm an "adult."  Kinda stinks.

I'm making a lot of my Christmas presents this year and I'm starting early.  (I already have one done--woohoo!)  I enjoy being crafty and sitting at home next to the warm fire brings back much better holiday memories than a hurried trip to the mall does.

I agree.  It can get so stressful, and every year the pressure to start shopping for holiday gifts starts earlier.  I usually take a personal day from work on a Monday in December and do as much shopping as I can that day.  It's more leisurely and I can actually enjoy shopping for what it is instead of feeling like I'm part of this frenzied rush to buy, buy, buy!

NCShopper, what are you making for your homemade gifts?

For my two cousins that are 1 and 2 years old, I'm making these cute stuffed dogs made from socks.  I finished the first one yesterday and it's adorable.  I think I'm going to start on the second one soon.  I'll post pics when I'm done with both.  For some girlfriends I'm going to try to make a pretty necklace.  I also plan on doing a fair amount of baking for neighbors and work colleagues.  For my brother in law, I'm making him a felt stocking, similar to one I made DH last year.  The stocking is going to have felt ornaments all over it, complete with sequins and actual ornament hooks.  I'll post pics of that when I'm done too.

I picked up a Martha Stewart Living magazine that was all about homemade gifts.  There are a TON of cute ideas in there.

I think I'm going to do all my x-mas shopping online because I'm on a strict shopping budget and I just know if I set foot in a mall I will end up spending on myself. It's much easier to resist things online.

I actually hate shopping around this time of year...but that's mostly because I can't stand crowds. Holiday music also starts to bug.

yeah NCShopper, i think you articulated it better than I did.  I guess right now I am missing the holiday traditions.  i want to go shopping with a purpose since I don't really need/want to spend money on myself right now, but physically Christmas shopping doesn't seem to be as fun, not to mention cost-effective anymore.  I remember the days when I would shop with my mom for the perfect gift for so many people, and now it's all online for a better price, or gift certifcates for the few people that i actually have to buy for (since we do grab bags at work, home, and for just about every single group that i would buy for).

i'll just have to make an effort to make traditions of my own until i have my own family.  i actually made the decision (typing this) to adopt a child so that i can actually shop.  and i'll be the person that everyone hates/loves (depending on who's on a diet) at work who brings trays full of cookies just so i can be nostalgic and bake my favorite holiday cookies...
