flying on thanksgiving?
Permalink Closed

i've decided that i want to try to fly home for thanksgiving (i know, it's so last minute!). flights seem to be about $200 cheaper if i fly on thankgiving day. does anyone have any experience flying on that day? is it a complete nightmare? i'll be flying direct from the bay area to boston, so i was thinking that as long as my flight isn't delayed it won't be too bad. am i wrong? it seems like wednesday would be the worst day to fly (and it's waaaay more expensive at this point), but i'm not sure. thoughts??

i need to decide really really soon before fares go up again...eek! thanks, girls!

i've never done it, but I've always heard that it's so much better to fly on an actual holiday like T-giving or Christmas Day. Most people are trying to get there before the actual day which makes the day before awful.

I could be wrong, but it makes sense to me!

Good Luck

We were just talking about this in my economics class and our teacher was telling us how its so much cheaper flying on the day of the holiday. Except for Christmas Eve. But from his experience he told us that the airports are practically empty which is why they always lower the prices. I think it would be better if you flew on Thursday then on Wednesday. I think Wednesday everyone is going to be flying.

I did & it was a breeze. I have also flown on Christmas day - same thing. It's the smart way to get your ticket cheaper because seriously, no one wants to fly on the day. It did kind of suck to eat airport food while I knew everyone else was dining on turkey but I got over it once I got there.

i always do.

i remember one year i was flying to dallas, and the wednesday night before, it was stormy, icy, windy, in chicago.  all the flights were delayed at least 3 hours.  then on turkey day, my SO and i flew at noon and it was fabulous.  the plane wasn't super crowded, the lines weren't long, the flight attendants were really nice, everything was on time, and when we got to where we were going we were hungry and we didn't have to help cook!

i did it, and it wasn't too bad.  granted, this was in 2001, a few months after 9/11, so it wasn't a 'normal' experience

I have never flown on Thanksgiving, but I did take a bus once... it was blissful. Nobody in the station, nobody in the road. I'll bet you'll find it a real pleasure.

I did it last year (flew in from Turkey on Turkey Day!!).  Anyway, I flew into Chicago O and it was fine.  The airport was very empty for Chicago and when I arrived in Kansas City my voice could have echoed from the emptiness.  I have also flown the day before and would always recommend day of if you can get to your party in decent time!!

I'm so glad I ran into this post.
I'm scheduled to land in O'Hare at 3:45 pm that Thursday.  I was stressing out about how it was going to be since we're still planning on making it to dinner at 6.  I think I can relax a little :)

You can definitely relax.... it was very EMPTY!  I got in a little after noon to Chicago (if I remember correctly) and had my pick of whatever seat I wanted at my gate.  I was on United (in case that is what you are flying).  You should make it to your dinner - no sweat!
