I need help!! Researching Cars???
Permalink Closed

I am completely ignorant when it comes to researching and buying a car.  The only thing I really know is I want power windows and doors (did not have power windows before) and I want a moonroof.

Other than that I really don't know what to look for.  What does horsepower mean?  Engine size?  Good MPG etc???  Basically which sites do you use to research cars when you are looking.  What is negotiable?  What are standard add ons you just can't get away from?

Its so disheartening to go on honda.com or toyota.com and see a car with a MSRP of one price and then actually go onto lots and not see a car on the entire lot anywhere near that price.  What is the real invoice price on cars and how close can you get to that when you are buying the car?

BTW I think I have it narrowed down to a 2007 accord or a 2007 g6 (any experiences please post).  Sadly I love the G6 the most because a) it is the exact same car as the one I have and love just newer and b) my cousin (same age/competitve nature) just bought a 2006 accord within the last month.  Are these riduculous reasons?

Anyways any words of wisdom are appreciated.

That's kind of my next step except finding a dealership with the g6 is proving to be a problem at the moment since I'm wanting the GT with a V-6.  I did finally find a dealership in the sticks so I think I might go next weekend.  Luckily the pontiac is the same car i have and the accord is the cheap version of my mom's acura which i've drove too haha.  I just need to decide something already.

When I was car shopping I spent a ton of time on cars.com

You can search the two (several?) you are interested in & shop them side by side. I also found a lot of info about what you can negotiate & such. Also I think the dealership you go to makes a ton of difference - can you get some recommendations from co-workers?

I will poke around today & see if I can find any of the info - I bought in July so I don't remember off the top of my head but I imagine I can find it again.

Engine size & all that - look, I am no expert. But I previous had an Acura with lots of HP (230) & now my Toyota has little (106). From a "girl" standpoint, the more HP you have the faster you can go quicker - better pickup & power. That also means worse gas mileage. To me if you can pull out & feel safe - which I do now even in my "slow" car - then it's not worth it for the HP. I doubt any man would agree with me though.

I don't think any reason you have is a ridiculous reason not to get a certain car. You have to drive it for a long time & the car you drive changes the way you feel in general IMHO - it is just a way to get from A to B but man, I love my new car & that makes all the difference on the journey there.

I'd also recommend seeing if you can find the Consumer Reports Auto issue.  Their ratings are always pretty good.
