I have to get my mom out of "mom jeans!"

I told my mom a while ago that I think she needs to get out of "mom jeans" - you know, the kind that come up too high, are too washed out, and taper.



She doesn't like to shop, though, so while she actually seems interested in getting out of her "mom jeans," she hasn't yet and I think I'm going to take her shopping for her christmas present. Any suggestions for certain jeans to look for, etc? She's going to be 50 soon, so nothing too radical or trendy. Plus, I have a feeling that if I finally get her in a flattering pair of jeans, she'll stick with those forever (again, she hates to shop she buys repeat things a lot). I think she's about a size 12.

I know this should be easy, but I'm so used to dressing a much younger, smaller body that I'm afraid of being wrong about what would flatter her. I'm not sure I can get her to buy anything with a low waist. Should I go with a simple boot cut? These are from Old Navy:

I think a boot cut would be a good start.  I might would try gap over old navy as I find old navy clothes to be cut a little more for the masses.  My mom has gotten into calvin klein and banana republic jeans lately (CK from Marshalls and BR from the outlet) and they are really flattering on her.  She has chicken legs though so she doesn't really go for the bootcut or much of a flare.

My mom never wore "mom jeans" but she did have ones that were less than ideal, when I started caring about clothes she bought things too. The pair she lives by are the Gap Long and Lean, they have a higher rise and a boot cut. She is 50 and a size 12 also and she looks great in them. I hope that helps.

Good for your mom!  I tried to get mine out of "mom jeans" and instead, she tried to talk me into buying some "mom jeans" for myself!   I second going to BR, they have some good boot cut jeans that aren't super low rise, so maybe she'd be more comfortable with them.

I second Gap. When I got my Mom out of mom jeans, that's what we bought for her, and she is about a 10/12. We had great luck with some Salt Works, too, but Mom wasn't willing to pay $150.

Ha! That picture is hilarious!  I'd just pick two stores that you'd be sure to get at least one good pair of jeans from.  Then she'd see shopping isn't so bad.  Anyways, I'd definintly go for a bootcut.

my mother-in-law has some decent fitting bootcut jeans from Coldwater Creek and (I think) J. Jill...i know she feels more comfortable shopping at those stores than at Gap cause she feels too old for the Gap.  not that i necessarily agree, but just something to keep in mind if you want your mom to have a good shopping experience.

My mom is about the same age as yours and she really likes the Old Navy jeans that you have posted.  She likes the rise because they're not too low, and they're really flattering on her.

My mom (who is 70) has both the gap flare and a pair of Ikeda bootleg jeans and they both look great.  She is rather unusual for her age though as she is 5'8", weighs under 130 lbs and has about a 34" inseam.


I am 43 (egad last day I can say that) and have gap long and lean but bought a pair of Ikeda jeans in a dark wash and haven't worn any of my other jeans since.  I think they are the 700 series.


The Lee one true fit jeans are pretty nicely cut and easy to find as well.  They come in a few different styles and have 1-2% spandex.

My mom, after losing some weight, just bought a pair of Banana Republic jeans. They look really cute on her. She then lost a little more weight and they are baggy in the butt, but its a start. Next step True Religion for my mom! Ok, that might be a little aggressive, but my sis and I are going to buy her a pair of 7s or Citizens for Xmas. Get some BRs for your mom - its a nice step up from Mom jeans, but not quite the height of fashion - its a good mix. She'll be happy in them. And, you can tell her all the moms are doing it! ;)

thanks everybody! Her best friend is also on my side, so maybe I can figure out a way for the three of us to go shopping... it sounds like BR is the place to go!
