I know we've talked about this before. Today I saw a Tracy Reese jacket from last fall, which if you believe the "compare at" price (which is usually accurate in my experience) retailed at about $700, for $170. I briefly thought about buying it and ebaying it but just couldn't pull the trigger. It was gorgeous--very similar to this style from Anthro, but more lush, with a more exaggerated collar. I thought I could potentially make about $50 off it since that style is so in right now, but was afraid to be out the cost of it. (Though it's lovely, I really don't need it).

Thoughts?

similar to this, but in topaz & bronze, with a giant collar:

I dunno...I'm no Ebay expert but I'd be afraid of no one paying enough for it. At least going by my experience selling more high ticket items: once I sold a new-with-tags Temperley dress and barely made more than I had paid for it. (I'd gotten it on a crazy sale for about $120.) Have you seen similar jackets for sale on Ebay?

My experience with that is that I won't buy something unless I know if I can't get my money back I will keep it for myself. Otherwise it's not worth it. I also don't think it's worth the hassle / gamble for $50. I think if the item was $2 & I made $50, sure, but not spending the much up front.

My FIL makes a living buying stuff at estate / garage sales & selling on ebay & his rule if he can't triple his money, he doesn't shell out the cost. I use this rule as a general guideline as well.

ETA: I also figure if someone is going to shell out that much $$ on the jacket they probably have similar access to a source to get it for a similar price that you do. That may not be true, but it's my train of thought on the subject.

If you want it for yourself go ahead and buy it.  To sell on ebay, no way.  The few times I have actually purchased items for intent on selling on ebay was because it was well going to be worth my time.

I'd only buy something to sell on Ebay if it was highly hyped, like Uggs were when they first came out or the JS Barbs. That way you'd be almost assured of a huge profit.

mmm, good points, all. I'm glad I didn't try it.

You can seach by completed listings to see what similar items are actually selling for. I always check this before I invest in something to sell on Ebay.
