Must Vent...Sick Of Long Shirts!
Permalink Closed

I am 5'5 and a size 6 but with a nice, round tummy and some hips, and I have to say that I am so sick of EVERY shirt in the store being so long (past my hips) that it hugs my lovely muffin top. Is this a trend??  When will we go back to normal shirts?  I was in so many stores today, Banana, GAP, Old Navy, J Crew...all the basics....and not one of them had a shirt or sweater that fell above my hips.  I feel like I am pretty average height, so can't even imagine what you ladies that are shorter than me are doing.  Any tips?  (Please don't tell me I have to get basic tees altered).  I feel like bunching the up at the waist only makes the issue more pronounced (plus looks sloppy).

i like long shirts, but i HATE when they skim my "muffin top".  Thats why i buy looser shirts that either skim the body or don't really touch it at all.  Maybe try sizing up or look for shirts that are specifically cut a little more slouchy?  Or you could try searching basics on eBay from a few years ago or go somewhere like Buffalo exchange.

I'm really liking this long-shirt trend, actually. If I think a shirt hugs my stomach too much, I'll bunch it up a little. Not enough to look really weird, but just enough to camoflauge my stomach. I can barely bring myself to wear my old shirts anymore, because I'm always worried about them riding up and exposing my stomach! I mean, I don't like crazy long ones. But a shirt that hits halfway between my waistband and the bottom of my fly is perfect, I think.

I must say I actually love this trend.  I have a long torso and all my shirts from a few years ago are waaaaayyyy too short for me to wear.  That said, I do hate those shirts that are too long to look normal as a top but too short to be a dress (F21 comes to mind).  I think they are supposed to be worn with leggings but I don't do leggings and I can never figure out if it is a top or a dress.

I am loving the long shirts!  I have a longer torso and just about every shirt is too darn short to the point where it might as well be a belly top.  Anyways, the longer fitted styles are long enough to cover my behind, but I bunch it up a bit.  And these longer style shirts are great for layering.

Me too! The trick is to bunch them up a bit and not pull the tight .. I think they look awesome layered with skinny or straight leg pants.

I love them and find that throwign in beater or something on underneath takes care of the muffin top problem!

I have a very long torso and no muffin top issues but I hate this trend too! It seemed like for a brief period there was a happy medium where tops were hip-length instead of mid-stomach on me but now almost everything I try on is way too long for my liking.
A lot of the longer tops look sloppy and not office-friendly to me and I hate layering with them because they many many inches longer than anything I own from previous seasons.

I'm not a fan of the long shirt trend.  I have a shorter torso, so the shirts seem even longer on me.  Mostly I feel like the longer shirts put to much emphasis on my hip.  I like the mid hip length much more.

agreed. I like the long shirt trend in general, but now that I think about it, the past month or so I've been seeing things that I'm not sure whether they're a dress or a shirt, and that is too long.

I like the long shirt trend too- although I know what you mean about the muffin top issue...I just scunch it up a bit and it looks fine...

I just hope crop tops/belly shirts don't ever come back

I hated long tops bacause of the way they showed off my muffin top and accentuated my hips. But I've experimented with them some more and noticed that some of them can look cute on me if they're a bit looser or slightly bunched up. Some are way too long and look really unflattering, though.

Long shirts are the best trend for me ever. I hate shirts that don't go past the hip, they look awful on me.

Ok, I must know...what is a muffin top?  Is it like belly fat?  Sorry, pardon my ignorance...

From Wikipedia...

Generally pejorative, Muffin Top (or Muffin Top Girl) is a slang term for someone who wears both tight fitting low-rise jeans (or pants) and midriff-baring tops. For people not sufficiently slim, the resulting spillage of skin at the midriff is often said to resemble a muffin top (see picture for comparison).
