I wanted to get some scary movies from Netflix for Halloween and would love some recs. I don't like gory stuff at all, the last scary movie I saw that I really liked was When A Stranger Calls. Any ideas? TIA!
Have you seen the original When a Stranger Calls from the 80s? Or the sequel, When a Stranger Calls Back?
I am not into gory stuff either. How about a creepy one, like The Others? Or Interview With a Vampire? Or even a Hitchcock movie like Rear Window or Vertigo?

To run off of Halleybird's Hitchcock idea The Birds is also a really good one and VERY creepy...I couldn't be near a blackbird for a very long time after I saw that one.

I recommend The Grudge. A little gory, but scary from beginning to end. I loved it. Also the Exorcist is super scary. Amityville Horror House. I've only seen the original but I've heard the new version is very scary too.
What I DON'T recommend is the new version of The Omen 666. It was too long and drawn out.
The Shining is the scariest movie IMHO, hands down. Gore doesn't scare me, but a creepy little kid who talks to his finger named Tony (yes, the finger is named Tony)? Yikes!
Scream, Carrie and Near Dark are also great scary movies.
Then again, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (with Gene Wilder) freaks me out too. Little men shouldn't be orange and green. It's just wrong.

Best movie - I love it! I believe the scariest movie ever is 28 days later. I think it's a little gory though.
I'd also recommend The Ring as scary but not gorry (that I can recall) & also Signs. I know that sounds crazy but that movie scared the bejesus out of me.
Also - have you seen any of the Scary Movie ones? I think the first one is absolutely hysterical - they get more stupid the further into the series you go - but it's a parody of scary movies & still puts me in the Halloween-ish scary movie mood.

I can't remember if the actual Halloween movies (Mike Myers, face mask, etc.) are gory or not, but they scare the crap out of me every time I see them! You have to get the early ones though, the new ones aren't as good. Also, What Lies Beneath with Michelle Pfeiffer was pretty good and not gory at all.
I LOVE scary movies but I'm not a huge fan of gore or blood. My triology of the best scary movies of all time are The Others (with Nicole Kidman), Rosemary's Baby (with Mia Farrow from the 60s), and The Shining (with Jack Nicholoson). There are actually great movies that happen to be really scary... more psychological scary than seeing a lot of blood.
I also liked Skeleton Key with Kate Hudson, but it wasn't as great as the movies above. Another recommendation is Helter Skelter. It's scary because it really happened... it's about the Charles Manson family.
