I usually go for either a vodka cranberry or vodka tonic w/lemon or a dirty martini.  I'm a vodka person - can't you tell.

I normally like a glass of champagne.  It's not too sweet, and it goes well with most appetizers.  I'm also partial to a kir or a gin & tonic if it's summer.

its really yummy because the diet coke isn't too overly sweet. I'm not a big fan of Coke as a mix, in general but I really like this. Also vanilla vodka and diet coke is steller too.

If I need to pick a random drink I just sample from the Martini bar or order a nice red wine to start with. I could name a lot of really good drinks but they are not really nice dinner appropriate.

Try a vodka collins - not too sweet, a little sophisticated, not too strong, if you are drinking it all night.
