I was on a similar mission. I really didn't want to even spend $100 because I'm 100% sure I won't like them in about 6 months... but of course I felt that I desperately needed them now. =)
I LOVE the dolce vita pair at shopbop, but they were of course waay out of my budget. I found this pair at alloy and was So excited!

They're cheap and not real leather, but I was fine with that, given the fact that they're super-cute and $40! I wore to work yesterday and got lots of compliments. So yes, they're a little cheapie (they don't actually look That cheap, except for the fabric bow) but it was a great compromise for me bc I wasn't willing to spend a lot. I'm v. happy!
(Also, I had been cruising eBay for weeks looking for a really cool, gently-used vintage pair and found tons in smaller sizes, but none to fit my big 'ol size 8's!) So if you're not opposed to vintage, you might try there. There are pairs I found that are totally identical to all the new ankle boots being sold now.
