help me pack for NYC!
Permalink Closed

My sister and I are travelling to NYC next week!  It'll be our first visit there for both of us.  Yippee!

We are mostly going to be doing a lot of walking around, shopping, and seeing a few of the standard tourist sites.

I'm not really sure what to bring.  I want to be comfortable walking around outside for long periods of time.  I'm thinking a pair of cords, a pair of jeans, a couple sweaters, and a handful of tees for layering.  I'll probably need a hat and scarf.

What else?

I really only want to bring one coat.  What would be most weather appropriate at this time of year?

What about shoes?  I don't have any super comfy flats, will I look like a knob if I wear Pumas most of the trip?

What is an appropriate outfit for going out for cocktails?

Also, we are going to see the musical "Wicked" during one of the weekday matinees.  Should I plan to dress up for that a bit?

TIA and sorry about the too many questions.  I haven't taken a proper vacation from my job in nearly two years, so i'm more than a little bit excited.

haha okay. first things first...

In the last week I've worn: my jean jacket with a scarf, a gap macintosh, my winter wool jacket, and a puffy vest! So there's no easy answer, really. Today was fairly warm during the day (Gap Mac was fine) but it has been getting cold at night and if you're planning on going out at night, perhaps you might want to bring a warmer coat. I'm always cold tho, so I could be a bad barometer! But I've seen people in everything from full winter gear (ok it's way too warm for that) to T-shirt (way to cold for that!) Maybe you could bring two coats: something lighter and something warmer and wear one of them so that you only have to pack one?

You will look fine in Pumas! I wear sneakers constantly here... I wear my Vans to walk to work in with dress pants. haha. I mean as long as they're not bright white reeboks... hee. But I'd bring something for going out (and going to the show of course).

As for going out, it really depends on the type of bar: you can go to a dive in sneakers or you can go to a club in a cocktail dress! Most of the time, most people are in the middle: The standard fun top, blazer, jeans, heels would be fine. I tend to be much funkier than I was in the ol' midwest so sometimes I'll wear slouchy boots, skirt or tucked in skinnies, etc etc. If you've been wanting to experiment and haven't felt comfortable trying out some of the new looks, this would be the place to do it—you won't feel out of place! (That said of course you'll want to feel comfortable). Anyhow, I can suggest more options if you tell me the kind of place (and area!) you'll be going out to. I tend to dress a little bit differently when I'm uptown and downtown.

And last but not least, the show! Because it's a matinee, you don't need to be super-dressy. I mean, you'll probably see some people in jeans and a sweatshirt. I am Not a fan of this. I'm not advocating evening wear, but I'm a little old-school about broadway: I think people should dress up! You'd probably feel overdressed in a cocktail dress, but I think something casually dressy (is that an oxymoron?) would be appropriate. I would wear something like flat boots, skirt, turtleneck, chunky necklace.

Phew! I just wrote a book! haha. Feel free to post or PM if you have more questions, want more specifics. I know how exciting a trip can be: I just went to Jamiaca and spent weeeeks obessively researching and asking questions about every little thing. Most importantly, have fun in New York!! :)

mandajeanie had some great things to say but I was following this thread too since I'm going next month & have many of the same concerns. So I decided to bump it for you to see if anyone else has any insight. I can't wait to hear about your trip!

So your Pumas are your go to comfy shoes? that is my main concern.

pack for comfort when it comes to walking shoes! you will probably be walking more than you do normally when you are sightseeing. so you don't want your footwear to hold you back from all the fun stuff there is to do in nyc. i wear flat boots, nike tennis sneakers, flats when i want to be comfortable or know that i will be walking a lot. if you are worried about looking stylish while still being comfy maybe try some outfit combos before you leave.

as for coat/jacket. things are really up in the air! i would bring a light jacket and just layer as needed. next week looks slightly chillier (hi 50s) and there is the possibly of rain (also something to think about when packing footwear!).

as for the show, ppl tend to be less and less dressy even for evening shows. i know some people when they come to town they like to make it an event, but it's really anything goes... but to be safe i would stay somewhere closer to dressy casual vs. cocktail dress.

On the shoes, if you really hate flats (like I do), you could try a comfortable wedge.  I find these are much more easier to walk in over the long haul while still giving you some height.
