Serious Hip Pain from running
Permalink Closed

I ran the half marathon 10 days ago. I lost 3 toenails and about mile 8 they really started to hurt (probably once my feet really started to swell). I wanted to quit but talked myself out of it. So I think the last 5 miles, I must have altered how I ran b/c I am having some serious hip pain. Not when I am still but when I sit Indian Style, Put on pants, walk or go up steps or sneeze.

What could I have done to myself?

We don't have a family doctor yet in Chicago. SHould I just try making an appt with a General Practioner?

Yes!  I say go see a doctor as soon as possible just to make sure it's nothing serious.  Sometimes I will get a bad pain in my inner thigh after a long run and I think it is from running differently or just pulling a muscle.  I can usually ice it a couple of days and it gets better.  Better safe than sorry and go to see a doctor he could always just give you some ice packs and antiinflamitory if it's minor.

Congrats on the race again!

Sounds like you could have pulled your hip flexers.  I did this in high school when I ran track.  It can be the worst pain...and they are very hard to stretch...takes some akward positions to stretch them well.

They took forever to heal on me, but I kept running track...so if you just lay off for a while, they should get better.  If I remember correctly, my coach had me alternate ice and heat for a while too.

If it isn't that, I have also heard of getting "hip pointers"...I don't really know what they are, but I think it has to do with the pounding from running.

Take ibuprofen to help as well.

Get Better!

That sucks. I once got SERIOUS hip pain when I started running too far too fast. Apparently in your ball and socket joint in your hip there is a thin film-type of thing and mine filled with fluid. It hurt to walk or do anything like that. It took me at least a month of not running and just resting it for it to go away enough that I could run again. Since then, my hips have always given me problems. I always do hip stretches before (light) and after my workouts.

I would highly suggest to go to a doctor, but they still might not be able to give you a definite diagnosis. (I have little faith in doctors lately.)

Congrats on the race and I hope that you feel better soon.

I went to the doctor and he gave me two shots of cortisone into the hip.  OUCH

We will see.

Hopefully, it will feel better soon.
