Coat Question For "Moms"
Permalink Closed

I also posted this on Mamastyle but thought some of you may be able to help me over here!

I'm needing a casual weekend coat.  The BR one from last year is an XS and won't work.Should I get a Maternity coat or maybe just get a regular coat in a larger size.  I know by month 7-9 a maternity coat will probably be a must but right now the ones I've tried on look sooooo big on me.  It's started to get cooler and cooler around here!

I was thinking something like this....

Are those maternity? Cause if not I wouldn't get them. They don't look like the have much stretch and won't last you long. They are adorable though!

I would either get maternity or something with stretch. Remember how you popped out around month 4? Well it's going to happen again sometime in your 3rd Trimester and maternity will be a must.

Something to remember... That bundle you are carying is going to act as a heater in your 3rd Trimester and you won't be as cold as you normaly are. I don't know where you live but I'm in Florida and last December I was 7 months pregnant with my 2nd child and I ran the AC and slept completely bare while my husband bundled up in a down comforter and shivered himself to sleep.

If you are not somewhere that is going to get really cold I would go with a warm Cable Knit sweater or something that will stretch and has a belt that makes it semi adjustable. Otherwise go Maternity or wear lots of layers.

If I remember right you are due around the same time I was last year. Feb right?

ETA: Another thing to remember is that not only will you grow in to Maternity clothing in the next months but my month 8 or 9 you will grow OUT of Maternity clothing (lovley right?).

I delivered my last baby in December and I just dressed in layers.  I would recommend a wrap style wool coat and just adjust the waist belt as needed.  Or even a down jacked with the waist cincher and just adjust it throughout your pregnancy. IMO it's a waste of money to buy a maternity coat unless you can find something really inexpensive.  Also I'm usually always cold, but when I was pregnant I was always hot, so wearing layers and a warm sweater should be fine with your reg. coat open, unless you use public transportation daily or walk to work.

Also even if you buy a pregnancy coat at 7 months, there is no guarantee it will fit(close properly) at 8-9 months.

HTH, and congratulations!

i'm clueless about maternity clothes...but if you only need a jacket occasionally right now (and depending on where you're going in it, grocery store vs. say, to dinner)...maybe you could just throw on one of your husband's coats?  that's what i'd probably do, but then again, i'm cheap.

of course i also hate coats, so i agree with just bundling up a bit extra and then using a big sweater as a coat.

In my opinoin I would invest in a maternity coat... nromal coat will not have enough stretch...I had a maternity coat from the gap, grey woool, that wad a tie at the waist so I could wear it as I grew

I think a maternity coat is a waste of money. Last year I just wore a maternity fleece jacket and wore my regular coats over them- unzipped/unbuttoned of course! In the end I was glad I didn't spend extra money on a coat and instead could buy a fabulous wardrobe for my new baby.
