I just went to the doctor for what I thought was going to be strep - sore throat for the last 7 days but no other symptoms, big spot on back of throat. Turns out, that big spot is not strep, it's a big ulcer! The doc and I tried to figure out what had caused it, and the only thing that fit was STRESS. House stress.
My house gave me an ulcer . Weird.

That stinks! I thought that doctors discovered that almost all ulcers are really caused by a certain bacteria rather than stress though. Or is that just for stomach ulcers?

That's just stomach ulcers, methinks. This is kind of like getting a cold sore or fever blister because of stress. Isn't that weird though? Too 'WTF?!' not to share, because I had no idea you could get an ulcer in your throat either ....
The meds are supposed to clear it up in a couple days, thankfully!

Strange tangent, but did you know you can also get a yeast infection in your throat? Weird stuff. And, conversely, you can also get strep down in your...ahem...hoo-hoo.
Elle that makes total sense now that I think about it. I always get a cold sore or something similar when I am really stressed out.

The throat must be a weird thing.
Sadly I know that because it happened to me when a doctor put me on heavy-duty antibiotics and didn't tell me to take acidophilus to prevent this from happening. It was beyond gross.

Gross! Did you know you can also get gonorrhea in your eye? (My friends and I commonly refer to it as the "eye clap." Ex. of usage: Friend 1 - "Sh*t. I've got something in my eye." Friend 2 - "It's probably the eye clap." We're a classy bunch.)
Elle - that sucks! I had no idea you could get an ulcer in your throat, although it makes sense. I hope you feel better soon! Hey, maybe you can swallow some of that Oragel stuff and numb that baby right up.
Ugh. It still really hurts, and it looks realllllly gnarly. Before I could only see that there was kinda some spot-ish looking thing back there. Now (that it's starting to heal?) I can plainly see that it's just a big-ass hole. In my throat. This is my third full day on the meds, and I would have thought it'd be at least a bit smaller by now!
Though I suppose I should thank my lucky stars that I do NOT have a yeasty-beasty throat, strep hoo-ha OR eye clap ..... if you put it that way I got of damn easy! Because, y'know, those ailments aren't nearly unfortunate enough when they stay where they belong ....

Elle -- I did that before, too! In college. I had a horrid sore throat on only one side for about a week. I thought I had infected tonsils or something, but it turns out it was a mouth ulcer in my throat (!!!). Mine was stress-related, too. It's fun to be a type-A personality, eh?

Halleybird - Do you recall how long it took to go away? Mine had been around for almost a week before I went to the doctor on Monday, I'm on day 4 of 5 days of meds, and it's still hangin' around ... 12 days and counting!

I think about 2 weeks, but about a week after I went to the dr. What kind of meds did they give you? They gave me this nasty ointment to put on it, but I gagged myself every time I did it. My grandma had this mouthwash-gargle stuff she gave me instead, and it worked much better.
Unfortunately, I get mouth ulcers all the time, even on my gums. It absolutely kills every time. I had one on the back of my tongue earlier this summer and it hurt to eat, drink -- everything!
I'd give it another couple of days and go to the doc early next week if it doesn't feel better. HTH!

Hmm, they gave me antivirals, told me to stay away from things that are acidic or very hot, and to try gargling with salt water . Not that I envy you the ointment! It hurts to eat most things, so I've been drinking loooots of ice water - the side effect of the antivirals is that they can be dehydrating, and mouth ulcer + dry mouth = oouuuuuch!
I'm going to give it the rest of the weekend, and if it's not considerably better on Monday I'm calling the doc again.
Do you know what was in the mouthwash/gargle? Homemade or storebought?

Poor Elle! I have had a couple of mouth/throat ulcers and they are excruciating. I got my first one my first semester of law school - key word being stress! As I remember, once I went on medication, it took about a week or more to heal completely. I got another one three years later while waiting for my bar results :). Take it easy and try to get a lot of rest. I found it helpful to drink warm fluids...like tea that's cooled down a bit. I also upped my garlic consumption...my mom is convinced that it is the cure all for any type of illness.
Thank you for the mouthwash rec, Halleybird! I'm going to the doc again tomorrow (I don't understand why though - it looks the damn same!) and I'll see what he says, but I'm swingin' by the pharmacy on the way home to pick some of that mouthwash up for sure!
For now, I'm hittin' the numbing throat spray. Hard. I've gone through a half bottle in 3 days , but it's the only thing that brings the sweet relief.
Wheeee! for knowledge about strange crap!
