Winter coat dilemma

I live in Dallas & we need a coat here maybe one week a year - maybe - at which time I wear my faux leopard short jacket. I'm going to be in NYC for Thanksgiving week & I'm assuming that it will be pretty darn cold, right? We are going to the Macy's parade as all good tourists do so I will be spending some time outdoors in addition to just walking from store to store to restaurant to store.

So what do you ladies suggest? I'm watching some vintage jackets on ebay for low cost consideration, but the one I really really like is a short pea coat type jacket - I'm thinking I will be cold on my legs even if I wear tights, jeans, and boots, right? Do i need something that hits mid calf? Have you seen anything for $100 or less that fits what I would need?

Help.

If I was going to be outdoors watching that parade I would most certainly wear a down coat, preferrably a long one with boots, scarf, mittens, and hat!  For out and about in town, I'd wear a wool coat.

I get almost all my winter jackets at vintage stores. They have tons of selection and great prices because, hey, it's Texas. You might want to check out some of those.

As for NYC being cold, I'd go prepared, just in case. I think you'd be fine with a coat, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. I can't imagine you being cold in November with all that stuff on, but maybe bring a pair of long underwear to wear under jeans, to be on the safe side?

I'll go do a look see for coats under $100 and post back what I find.

I'm not sure how warm this one would be but it's affordable and versatile:

 $100.50
 $73.50

 $96

 $73.50

That's a tough one! The weather here in November can vary so much - some Thanksgivings it's kind of warm (well, warm for NYC), sometimes it is absolutely bitter cold, sometimes it snows. I don't think you really need a super long coat - my longest coat is knee length and my heaviest wool coat is a few inches above the knee. You should be ok with a heavy pea coat, just be prepared with a bunch of layers in case it is freezing - tights, leggings or long underwear, long sleeve tees, heavy sweater, hat, gloves, etc. When it's really cold here I wear both tights/leggings and wool legwarmers under my boots, under my jeans!

NYC is pretty freaking cold- especially if you're used to the warmer weather. I want to say it usually flurries at least a little that time of year, and it can be pretty windy. That being said, I don't think you need something that's long, as long as its warm. And def. layer something under your pants and wear a scarf and hat!
