Any hints for posing for self photos?
Permalink Closed

A couple of weeks ago I took a bunch of photos of myself in different outfits indoors and out, with and without flash, and tried to stand different ways to show off. I didn't like any of the results enough to post them. I did learn a lot from this experiment though. I am keeping my 20-year old cashmere coat that I was about to give away. Unfortunately, it looks like a big black blob in the pictures I took.

Any helpful hints from those of you who always look so great, as well as relaxed in your photos? How do you keep the detail and textures? How do you keep the subtle colors from washing out?

I don't have any helpful tips, but I sure help someone does.  I'm so sick of there being a lot of flash in my photos!

i don't think i exactly look great or relaxed in my photos but i have taken quite a few for TS over the years, so here's what i can offer:

best tip #1: find a place to take the photo that has good enough lighting to turn your flash off. this will solve a lot of the color washing out and lost detail problems. then make sure your light source isn't directly behind you (like a large sunny window) which will make your image dark and shadowy.

best tip #2: if you're able to, use an image editing program to adjust any brightness or contrast issues. maybe i'm just a terrible photographer with a sucky camera but i always bring my photos into photoshop to adjust the levels. it makes a remarkable difference.

that's all i got. anyone else?

I use the timer on my camera to take my pictures--that way you get all the details without having the annoying flash in the mirror that's impossible to get rid of.

Another trick for me was to find an object to place the camera on that's about hip high.  When I rested the camera on something taller, it ended up making me look like my legs were ultra-stubby and when I took the picture with the camera on the ground, it didn't work at all.

I always turn on all the lights in the room and turn the flash on.  Because the best place for me to take pics is unfortunately directly in front of a window, my pictures still come out kind of dark and I have to use photo editing software to adjust the brightness.

(This is going to sound incredibly dorky...) In terms of posture, I've read that you want to have your feet apart and one foot in front of the other, so that your hips aren't square to the camera.  Does that make sense?  You basically want your hips twisted just a little bit and it'll make them look smaller.  I think I usually put my hands on my hips or something because I have no idea what else to do with my hands and feel like I look like a dork if they're by my side.

Hope this helps.

Stand more to the side instead of straight forward if you want to appear slimmer.

I always edit my photos to make them look better to bring out the lighting and colors.

Take photos in lots of light.  Have the brighest light sorce in front of you, not behind you.
