contact/eye problems
Permalink Closed

I've been having a TON of problems with my contacts lately. They started at the beginning of the summer. I went to the eye doctor, and he almost had to take me off of my contatcs for a while b/c I apparently almost gave myself an eye infection. I had lots of halos, they were always dry, and I had a lot of discharge from my eyes. So he put me on Acuvue Oasys, but I'm still having the same problems, and I have cut way back on the hours that I wear them - I'd say betweeen anywhere between 8-12 hours per day, though the average is probably like 10. I've recently started rubbing my contacts when I clean them, because I feel like they're always dirty. I also switched from Alcon Opti-Free Express No Rub solution to Opti-Free Replenish, but it hasn't made any difference. Any advice? Has anyone had this problem? Thanks. Sorry for such a long post too.

Do you have disposables? I've been wearing contacts for 15 years and I have never had the problems you've described. The only time I've ever had even slight discomfort is when I wear the same pair for too long or need a new prescription. Since you've been to the eye doctor recently, I assume your prescription is up to date. I would suggest you try switching to glasses full time or try daily disposables, but I would also suggest trying to talk to the doctor again.

Also, when I was young and poor, I always got my contacts from chain stores. When I got my first decent paying job, I went and saw a real, old school eye doctor. I swear it made a world of difference...

I have two week disposables. I bought them from the eye doctor too. Hmm, I don't know. It's bothering me though!

you're not sleeping in your contacts are you?  i assume you're not since you said you're only wearing them 8-10 hours a day...but that's the only thing i can think that would cause problems.  i'd might try to wear your contacts only every other day or something, just to see if it makes any difference.

otherwise...maybe find another eye doc and get a second opinion?

ETA:  one more thought...could it maybe just be severe allergies?  do you have any other allergy symptoms?  my contacts always irritate me when i'm having bad allergies...

That sounds terrible.  Could you go without them for a week to let your eyes go back to normal?  I would recommend going to a different doctor.  I've never had problems like that for that long; there might be a different brand of contacts or different brand of solution that would work better?

I was having a lot of problems with my contacts so I basically started wearing glasses most of the time.  Then I started seeing a new optometrist who had me try out about 4 different pairs of disposable contacts that allow more oxygen to the eye.  I chose the ones that felt the best but honestly I still had problems wearing my contacts every day.  So dealt with wearing contacts only every so often.  Recently I had another eye exam by the same optometrist and he gave me yet another pair to try.  I LOVED this pair.  I was able to wear them much more often.  I haven't ordered them yet because I still have a supply of the old pair and it just seems a waste of money to throw those away.  But I plan on ordering the new pair and I will ask what brand they are for you--maybe you can try them out and see if they work.

Thanks everyone! No, I don't sleep in them. I will try wearing my glasses for a week or so, if that doesn't work I may need to find a new eye doctor. Daiz, if you could check on the name, that'd be great!

So I ended up going to a new eye doctor, and I do have an eye infection. I can't wait my contacts for at least a week. He said I've been wearing my contacts too long, though I swear I've only been wearing them max 12 hours a day. I guess once it's cleared up I'll have to try 9 or 10 hours max. I just hate wearing my glasses because they give me a headache!

That happened to me once in high school. I had to wear glasses for two whole weeks. I was mortified. Apparently the red (veins?) things in my eyes were starting to grow inward instead of outward. I have no idea what sense this makes but that's what I remember.

Anyway, after I gave my eyes the break, I never had another problem. I wear contacts all the time and for practically 10 years now I've never had any other kind of irritation. (Aside from when I need to change pairs.)

I went back to the eye doctor today (last week he prescribed some drops) and my eyes are still not better! Apparently 99.9% of the time, a person's eyes will be better after a week, but not mine. I have to use some new drops for the next two weeks, and apparently I have superficial punctate keratitis! Has anyone else had this?
