I'm moving to San Diego late next month and would appreciate any words of wisdom regarding where to live, things to look out for, etc. I'm thinking I want to live in Pacific Beach because it seems like a fun area with lots of young professionals. I plan on finding a roommate(s) and renting. I hope to find a place while I'm out there next week. Any advice from San Diegans?
I moved to SD last year at this time. Apartment hunting can be challenging, because vacancy rates are fairly low, so just be aware of that.
PB is a fairly young crowd (not sure how old you are, but if you are closer to 30 than 20, I wouldn't recommend it). That being said, it is the party beach town in the SD area and it has a strong entertainment district and is very casual. I particularly like the Crown Point area around PB. Don't live in Ocean Beach.
If you are looking for higher end beach community, La Jolla or Del Mar are the places to go.
If you want urban funk, I would recommend Hillcrest, North Park, University Heights or Mission Hills. You can also find some nice apartments in homes in the Old Town neighborhood.
Downtown is good, but rent prices are very high unless you move to East Village which is still on the fringe.
Coronado is lovely and you can always find rental property there since Navy moves in and out.
If you have any other specific questions, feel free to PM me.
1. I wouldn't recommend living in PB unless you like paying exhorbitant amounts for semi-decent housing, being surrounded by rowdy college kids, and a tatoo/hippy/grunge kind of vibe.
2. If you're looking for a "young professionals" area, your best bet will be downtown SD and surrounding area.
3. If you want a beautiful place to live, look at Del Mar or La Jolla. I loved living in La Jolla, and when I visit SD I spend most of my time in Del Mar. It has the best beach, and a good "young professional" crowd at the bars.
If you have any other questions (restaurants, places to go, etc), let me know!
