does cashmere shrink?
Permalink Closed

My experience with cashmere has been limited, and I've made a resolution of sorts to start building up a collection of nice cashmere sweaters. According to what I've read, it's best to only dry clean them once a year and shampoo them in between if they need to be cleaned. Anyone have tips on the best way to care for them and how to prevent them from shrinking, if that does happen? TIA!

my experience/understanding is that you should never dry clean cashmere - the chemicals they use can break down the fibers. i have used the dryel stain solution when i've had spots to clean, but then i handwash after using that.

i hand wash mine with woolite and then block them on sweater drying racks and i've never had any problems with shrinkage - actually i sometimes have the opposite problem and the arms gets stretched out during the hand-washing process. i don't normally mind that because the arms on my sweaters are always on the short side anyway, but i haven't figured out yet how to prevent this from happening.
