esp. big thanks to D for the suggestion of the candlelight concert at St. Martin-in-the-Fields. We went to one the night before we left and it was just lovely.

you guys are so sweet! thanks for the nice responses!
details:
we were in Giverny for the day visiting Claude Monet's home. It was really important for me to take B there b/c he loves Monet but never visited before- plus- its neat to see his home b/c everything on his land and house is what he painted. ex. the lilypad pond, the japanese bridge, etc.
so, we visited the house, had lunch at a cafe across the street and then had about 2 hours to kill before taking the train back to paris. we walked along the road of this sleepy little artist town and found the "american institute of art" (i think it was called that) and they had these gardens that were open for anyone to go in and look at. we walked up to this little clearing bit with apple trees all around and some benches to rest. we sat at one of the benches and just as we were sitting there, a light summer rain started to fall. the sky was clear blue but it was just that summer rain that lasts about 10-15 minutes- you know?
so we moved further back under the apple trees to get out of the rain as much as possible and he asked me to hold the carrier bag he was hanging on to that had things we bought from the Monet house. (and to admit i was kind of put off b/c the bag was HEAVY and i didn't want to be stuck carrying it) and the next thing i knew- he was down on one knee with the most GORGEOUS ring! and of course, i said yes!
he had been carrying the ring with him the ENTIRE trip! and the bag he had it in, i had been in and out of countless times getting the camera, our travel books, etc. and never even found it! i was completely surprised. i said some things about getting engaged over there to him- but didn't really think it was going to happen. turns out it did.
