non processed food suggestions?
Permalink Closed

I want to go on a detox diet of sorts that involves actually eating (i'll pass out if i do the fruit or strange liquid only kind!)  I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow and am trying to think of good meals i could make myself that aren't super processed and are somewhat healthy (i eat meat- and i dont mind eating foods w/fat ie real butter).  I'm stumped- any suggestions?

Hmm... some things like to do are: sautee chicken, slice it and serve it on top of mixed greens. Serve baked potatoes topped with sauteed mushrooms. oatmeal (whole, steel cut, not instant) topped with fresh berries. fresh berries with a glass of milk. apple and cheese (or is cheese too processed?) Good luck, I think whether or not i'm eating processed foods makes a really big difference to how quicky I gain weight, and how well I feel.

If you want something for breakfast in the morning that's easy, you could make your own granola tomorrow.  I've used Alton Brown's recipe on the Food Network website and it's WONDERFUL.  Plus, it'll make your apartment smell great.  You can eat it with milk, or mix plain yogurt with it and add some honey and some berries and it's excellent.

DH and I try to stay away from processed foods as much as possible, or as much as convenience allows.  Instead of chips and salsa for an after work snack, I cut up pitas, put them on a cookie sheet, drizzle with olive oil and a little bit of salt and pepper and put them in the oven on 350 for about 15 minutes and eat them warm with hummus.  (I have no idea how to make hummus, so I buy the pre-made kind.)

you guys, exactly what is a processed food?  like, what are the criteria in determining whether a food is processed or not?

i usually define "processed" as anything that is a step away from how the food exists in nature. i.e. foods with artificial additives or preservatives. the other big ones that i look out for (and stay far away from) are added sugar, white beet sugar is the most refined so i try to stay away from products that contain it. if i do by a packaged or boxed food, i'll look for evaporated cane juice on the label which is less processed or i'll use date sugar (which is pulverized dates) as a sweetener. and of course white flour is highly processed too and i avoid it at all costs. it's everywhere though.

lynnie — i don't really have any specific suggestions for you as far as meals go, but if you're making your meals from scratch and using natural ingredients you should have a fairly non-processed finished product!
