Sorry, don't have time to post actual outfits, but I would bring layers because it's cold and windy and flats if you're going to be walking a lot, because hiking up the hills in heels is a challenge (and I always, always wear heels, so you know I'm serious about this).

First--keep a watch on the weather report. Oftentimes there will be a warm spell in September or October, then the city blossoms in sundresse--apparently kept in closets all year just waiting for the one sunny day.

There are always a lot of tourists in SF, so casual wear is fine. Definitely agree with layers and comfortable low shoes. Even if it's nice and sunny during the day, the fog usually rolls in late afternoon, and it is often windy too.

If you are attending an event or eating at a nice restaurant, people dress more fomally.

Early fall is a great time to visit. I'm sure you will have a great time.

I agree with everything that was already said. In my opinion, SF is very casual chic; unlike NY where many people are kinda minimalist chic. I don't know your style so here are some good outfits I personally like that incorporate good basics you probably already have...

(the 3rd outfit)

I like J.Crew and I think they're perfect for SF weather.

Another good look:

You'll "blend" in well with this outfit, imo.

Will take the layers advice for sure.  Great pictures, thanks exsupahero.  I've been wanting a scarf similar to the one with the woman standing against the wall....where can i find something similar in style?
