two questions for people who know about hair

I present to you a happy marriage of two of my current favorite things: 60's style and Rachel Bilson. Now, I've never been into maintenance on my hair--it is very straight and fine so I generally don't fight it, I just wash and go. But I'd love to know how to create this look she's got going in the first pic: sleek, but with a puff of volume at the crown of her head. What's the best way to do that? And question #2: is there any kind of process I could have done to my hair that would make it look like pic #2? I would love, love, love to have my hair fall in loose waves like that all the time, without having to go to the trouble to really style it. I don't want a perm but for some reason I feel like there's something that gives this effect... or am I fantasizing?

First of all, I adore her hair in those pics, especially the first one.  That is how I aspire to get mine to look for evening... so cute.

I'm just going to guess based on what I've learned from my stylist...

For the first look, she may have used a thickening shampoo/conditioner (I've used Bumble and Bumble and it makes a big difference in my hair's overall texture) followed by a thickening spray, then had it blown dry straight with a round brush to maintain volume at the top.  After that, I think a very large barrel curling iron or possibly hot rollers were used, and after THAT, it looks like she had it teased/pouffed up a bit to avoid that too-perfect look.  In the second pic I definitely think it was a regular-sized curling iron with the hair curled loosely away from the face.

Hope that helps!  Just a guess, but I hope it helps you get that look :)

like what jacks said on the first pic, probably blow-dried with a large round brush, with concentration on the top. with a lot of spray, probably ratted (teased very heavily) under the crown area...a few pieces probably randomly curled at the bottom.

for the second look, you can blow-dry your hair, then after it's dry, wrap your hair on the OUTSIDE of the curling iron (1" barrel at least). hold the ends off of the iron (or loosely on) so that they don't get that overly curled bottom..but instead resemble wavy hair.

if you have slightly wavy hair, you can just put some wave spray like bumble & bumble, john frieda etc and let it air dry without combing/brushing your hair at all..then after it's dry, smoothing a little shine serum or spray (i like vinyl glam from redken -- nice shine that's not too heavy for fine hair).

for #2, try the frizz-ease curl spray. I've been using it a lot and it give my hair nice loose curls like that (just spray and scrunch a little) and it doesn't make my hair crunchy or anything at all.

oh wow, my hairstylist just did my hair like rb's in pic 2.  here's what she did:

after cutting my hair (about 3 inches off the bottom, layered in the front), she blew it dry using a round brush.  when she finished blowing dry each hair section, she would lift the section up, kind of curling it back up in the shape of the round brush, and bobby pin it to my head.  the hair section bobby pinned looked like a round little "o", like it was wrapped around an invisible roller, if that makes sense.  she did it w/ all my hair.

she told me to take it out right before the party.  then flip my hair upside down and just kind of shake.  initially, it was very voluminous but after a while it looked like rb's in pic 2.  i loved it!

oh, i should add:  i have naturally thick wavy/curly hair that i usually blow dry w/ a diffuser.  when i go to my stylist, she usually blowdries it straight so she can check her cut but this time we wanted to do something different because i was going straight to a party.

anyway, hth!

Another suggestion, try velcro rollers for height at your crown.  They are in expensive and pretty easy to use.  I've used them in dry hair then hit it with a blow dryer.

Big Sexy Hair brand Volumizing blow-dry gel would be a good one to try to get some volume too. I love it!
